  1. Well, hello everybody, nice to meet you all, Surgebinders, Allomancers, and Voidbringers alike. I'm a relatively recent Brandon Sanderson/ Cosmere fan. By relatively recent, I mean for over a year now, and by 'fan' I mean I'm freaking in love with the man, his magnificently imaginative mind, and the masterpieces of fantasy that he's created. The Mistborn Series was my introduction to him and to the Cosmere and boy did I love every bit of it. I've since read all the six book in the series (the trilogy and the Era 2 books) along with the Secret History novella. I dived into Stormlight Archive because I needed something to hold me over until the next Mistborn books comes out, and also I needed more Sanderson goodness in my life in general and had heard really good things about the series. I had high expectations but storms I never thought it could ever surpass Mistborn for me. I was pulled into the story and the world by the very first page of WOK, by the end of the book I'd already fallen in love with the world; and now, having just finished WOR this morning, I...well, the 'impossible' has happened. The Stormlight Archive has surpassed Mistborn , oh the latter is still - and will be always - among my all time favorite works of fiction, but Stormlight Archive...it's just breathtakingly epic, and we're only 2 books in! Which is why I'm here. I needed a venue where I could share my sheer awe and love for the series and the Cosmere and just the genius that is Brandon Sanderson as a whole. I'm still riding the high of the epicness of WOR, so much pent-up fanboy energy to release, lest I explode. It's so great to have others to discuss, admire and just generally geek over this amazing books with. I'm so excited to be a part of this community.

  2. Great work, thank you for helping out! I felt bad about the delay. So here is the link to the completed transcript, and I'm putting in spoilers below (for length) the text of it. Some great WoBs, maybe not quite as spectacular as the Germany event but some excellent questions. Thank you so much to everyone who helped out, particularly @swieczq and @strumienpola!! And please note that it isn't everything he said, there are time markers with very short summaries for those interested in the topic.

  4. ... I don't know if this deserves a bad day post. It isn't anything specific after all. But... Well, I sort of want to indulge my melancholy a little, I guess. I've been having some mood swings for the past few days, but even that makes it sound more serious than it is. Maybe once a day, I'll be doing something and then my brain will just be like "Nope." I suddenly just feel kind of sad and lethargic, and don't want to do anything. I tried going for a walk yesterday when it happened - get some fresh air - but I couldn't really muster the energy to be bothered with that. This is something I know I've mentioned here before, and honestly, it's not even as bad as it used to be. Like I said, maybe once a day, and it does end up passing after alittle while, just... not really fun.

  5. A few days ago, Sib Hashian, the drummer for the band Boston passed away. I will dedicate this to him. This song centers on Hoid. I woke up this morning and the God was gone Picked up my flute to start the day I lost myself in a Worldsinger’s song I closed my eyes and drifted away! (Song break) It’s more than a feeling (more than a feeling) When I play that old song they used to sing (more than a feeling) And I begin Breathing (more than a feeling) Till I see Tanavast walk away I see old Tanavast walkin’ away So many Shards have come and gone Their power fades as the years go by Yet I still recall as I wander on As clear as the God in the Yolen sky! (Song break) It’s more than a feeling (more than a feeling) When I sing that old song they used to play (more than a feeling) And I begin Weaving (more than a feeling) Till I see Tanavast fade away I see old Tanavast fadin’ away When I’m driftin’ and thinking cold I hide in the mists, forget the day And dream of a God I used to know I closed my eyes and it Shattered away It Shattered today! (Song break) It’s more than a feeling (more than a feeling) When I hear that old song they used to play (more than a feeling) And I begin Soothing (more than a feeling) Till I see myself drift away!

  10. To go back and answer the original question. I think that we have seen one particular way that surgebinding could be powered by the metallic arts. The key is the ability Lift has to convert food to stormlight. If Lift had the abilities of a bendalloy twinborn, she could take the nearly infinite caloric energy available to her and convert it to stormlight. As an aside, Lift as a bendalloy twinborn would be the perfect fit. She could eat as much as she wanted without having to stop because she became full. She would never have to be hungry, and would always have stormlight available to power her surges. Wayne has shown how powerful bendalloy bubbles are for forcing one-on-one melee combat, and a bendalloy bubble is a perfect complement to battle field medicine. Lift would be able to effectively instantly heal other people and enjoy an almost perfect defense while doing so. Sorry... Lift grew on me during edgedancer, and I am now imagining what an edgedancer slider with essentially infinite stormlight could do.

  11. So, as some of you know, I said that Brandon accidentially revealed the end of Stormlight and cosmere to me and the rest of the Polish fansite crew when we were interviewing him. That's not true. I repeat, no such thing happened. Neither end of Stormlight nor end of cosmere is known. Why did I do this? See, when we finished interview and were getting out our books to be signed, I asked whether we could record the signing line the next day. I mentioned that 17thShard would love to have it (the recording). At that point Brandon lightened up and said "Oh, those guys? Tell them I told you how Stormlight ends... no, how the whole cosmere ends!" *devilish grin* I'd been more than happy to oblige. But as one Sharder pointed out to me, this can go too out of hand. I was already PMing Sharders who got too hooked on that thing to calm things down but I decided I will debunk the whole thing now instead of next week. If anyone is mad at me for this, I'm sorry. But when Brandon Sanderson asks you to troll people, how could you refuse? tl;dr: I was trolling at Brandon's request. Here is the original trolling post:

  12. Hey guys! I'm new here, so hi to everyone. I managed to attend all 4 events in Leipzig. This was my first time meeting Brandon, and I had a lot of fun. It was also great meeting members from the 17th Shard forums. They encouraged me to finally stop lurking and make an account here. I guess some of you guys are doing transcriptions here. I'm looking forward to that. I'll post my experiences on Reddit in a few days.

  14. Amnar the Watcher was not invited. Of course, that wasn't to say he didn't go anyway. For a long stretch of time, he followed from a distance, tracking the movements of the figures in the night. They all seemed to be going toward one particular location, though Amnar couldn't pinpoint it exactly. He followed one such figure for some time--whether is was a few minutes or a few hours, he didn't know. He was merely a shadow, content in an ambient state. He suddenly froze as another man, this one in a silver-streaked cloak, darted from an alley and smashed the first figure on the head with a dueling cane. The figure crumpled, and satisfied with his work, the assailant picked up the unconscious body and hauled it away. Amnar watched all this from afar. Slowly, carefully, he slunk out from his hiding place and followed the newcomer. These were dangerous men, and it never hurt to be too cautious. He didn't get far before coming aware of movement behind him. Turning around, he saw another silver-cloak attempting to sneak up behind him. Fools. This was his domain. He dropped that one with a dagger, but the dying man's scream alerted his fellow silver-cloak, who attempted to run. Another dagger felled that one noiselessly. Upon closer inspection of the bodies, the silver-cloaks were each carrying identical bags. He unbuttoned one and found that they were filled with stacks of papers. He took the top one off the stack and read: Dear Astrid, You may have disliked the kidnapping that you have no doubt experienced, but we expect you to easily overcome such an issue. We hope you enjoy the experience that is being provided to you by the Lord Tekiel Amnar stopped reading after that. He knew all he needed to know now. "The Lord Tekiel." Before leaving, he dragged the unconscious figure--Astrid, it would appear--into the safety of a darkened building, then fused himself back into the shadows and vanished. - The silver-cloaks came back for Astrid. She was still unconscious when the others saw her (nobody knew if she was even still alive) but one of the others found a small slip of paper when rifling through her pockets: Keep a careful eye on he who follows [MARK IV]. He is plagued with darkness, or else overcome by it. Have patience. Stay vigilant. I have been waylaid by dawn's coming; let yourselves not be waylaid by the dusk. AMNAR THE WATCHER

  18. Wow. Within eight hours or so, we've already gotten to four pages. So the main suspicions, it seems, are Wilson(though that seems to have defused some) and Mark. I distrust Wilson from experience, which comprises AG3, in which Wilson was an Elim and I had no idea. So don't consider that of any worth. There are many new individuals in this game, so I have no idea how they play, etc. we still have at least 24 hours left, so how about we get to eight pages? And I'll vote sometime between then. Quinn turned to the sound of footsteps approaching. It was a man, who was staring at him with as much intensity as a fire. Oh no... Quinn opened his mouth to greet the man, but he was cut off with a stunning slap across his face. His mouth hung open, dazed. Ooh, that must have hurt. What was that for? 'Oh, it's a rather innocent looking accountant, I'll go slap him!' Rusts, man! He must have had a reason. Quinn rubbed his cheek, which was a violent red. He looked up at the man, who looked down at him, arms folded. Show him! Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight! Shush! That's the worst possible response! Quinn stood, still rubbing his cheek, and faced the man. At full height, Quinn was just barely an inch taller than the man. He reached towards him. "I'll take that as a greeting," he said as he shook the man's hand. Way to be boring, Quinn.

  21. I've said similar things as well, even before Aman said it. I just don't care enough to go find them. There's nothing inherently wrong about acknowledging an IKYK, and it's well-known (to players who've played 3+ games with me) that I dislike them and mostly tend to ignore them, beyond an initial acknowledgement. Also, because I missed this the first time around: Just because the Inquisitor is more likely to adopt a passive playstyle at the beginning doesn't mean they will be silent. Cessie, the Inquisitor in LG2, wasn't silent. She posted. She just adopted a very neutral stance, since she was brand new to the games (but most of us were at that point). I fully expect the Inquisitor to be posting, and possibly even taking an aggressive stance, depending on who it is. For example, were Meta the Inquisitor, I certainly wouldn't expect him to be passive. Same with Aman. There are certain players who won't adopt a passive playstyle because it's so against how they generally play that they cannot. But most others are easily able to be passive. It's more likely that the Inquisitor will have a passive playstyle at the beginning, but it's not certain, and it's certainly not a must for them to be silent. And if they speak at all, they risk attracting suspicion and the lynch. Passive players have done so in the past so it's not hard to imagine it could happen again. As for discussion if we decide not to lynch: there's plenty to discuss and to try to minimize that is ridiculous. We can discuss role and actions. We can discuss potential Uber-metals. We can discuss roleclaims. We can discuss things players have said thus far. Or, better yet, we can try to engage those who haven't posted yet and draw them into the game. There are many things we can discuss, and it's not my job to figure that out for you. But here's a question for everyone who thinks we should lynch D1: With only 1 eliminator in the game right now, what information do you expect to gain in the lynch discussion? In a normal elimination game, where there are multiple starting eliminators, you can potentially start tying players to one another based on how they defend each other, assuming you're paying attention and taking notes and willing to look back on those notes and tie things together (most people say there's information in a D1 lynch, but they rarely, if ever, go back and find it to use it). Day 1 lynches in standard games are good, particularly for the players who analyze and take notes. But that's not something that's going to happen on this Day 1 because even if the Inquisitor defends anyone, it's not a legitimate tie because that person isn't a teammate. The Inquisitor has no teammates right now, and they're unlikely to give away their alignment if they are talking a lot and taking stances. Therefore, we net practically zero in terms of useful information, and we kill one of our own. Nice job? Oh, but if we don't lynch, we'll start D2 in the same place, but with one player dead. Yes. And guess what happens if we do lynch? We'll still start D2 with practically no info, but this time, we'll either be two villagers down, or one villager and a convert. That's even worse. Please explain to me why a D1 lynch in this game is absolutely critical. Lastly, Yitzi's idea has merit for this cycle, though I think it's more about the Seeker building a circle of people they can trust for now. However, this is running on the assumption that we even have a Seeker, which we might not. I will assume we do until I see proof to the contrary. The Inquisitor is highly unlikely to show up as "Inquisitor" on a scan. With how outnumbered he is, proper balance dictates that he has something to keep him relatively safe until mid-game, assuming nothing goes drastically wrong (like a lynch survival and scan as a regular villager). His Uber-Copper (I definitely think he has Uber-Copper, or something similar) likely makes him scan as a villager. Whether that's a regular villager or a Misting or even a Mistborn remains to be seen. I strongly suspect it's regular villager. And to address Rand's counterpoint, that's not really an issue right now. Assuming the Inquisitor has the ability to include another person in his uber-coppercloud (I doubt it), that would probably be an active inclusion rather than passive, which means that if he decided to do that, he'd be sacrificing his kill or his conversion, since he can only do one action per cycle. Until a Smoker dies and the Inquisitor converts someone afterwards, we can safely assume that the Inquisitor isn't interfering with scans, unless he himself is scanned. It would probably be wise of the Seeker to be wary of regular villager scans and not blindly trust those you've scanned because the Inquisitor could convert someone in your circle. ...I wasn't supposed to get this involved. I'm actually a little irritated at myself now. :/

  22. Thanks all for mentioning me; I was just busy for the last 16 hours. A couple things: @Arraenae, the quality of discussion that a poke vote produces is somewhat neutered if the subject of said discussion is how you're an irrational player and shouldn't have made a poke vote, ya feel? I probably could have explained that in seven paragraphs, but I'm not @Amanuensis, ya feel? @little wilson most accurately represents my feelings on lynches for this game. I...don't have a standard view on D1 lynches. My opinion changes with the amount of pollen in the air. However, in this game, I believe the potential cost of lynching a Coinshot (or whatever) far outweighs the potential benefit of lynching the Inquisitor. Also, for all of those who idolize discussion, and say things like "But we gain so much useful DISCUSSION from poke votes and lynches,"......no we don't. Not on Cycle 1. We gain discussion, but not useful discussion. I'd like someone to show me, even hypothetically, one "useful" piece of discussion that you'd gain from a D1 lynch. There's one evil person in the game right now, and the idea that that person will say anything majorly alignment-indicative in the first cycle is ludicrous. TL;DR Discussion itself is not the be-all, end-all.

  23. I think that's because pretty much everyone agrees that he was justified in what he did, for the reasons you say! :-) Unfortunately, Adolin seemed to think what he did was illegal; this is backed up by multiple opinions throughout the books regarding the convention of direct confrontation outside of duels or war being very unAlethi, to the point of illegality. Therefore the justice and/or morality/ethicality of what he did is generally agreed and so needs no further discussion; The precise nature of the response to his actions by the Alethi, particularly if they will consider it a crime, and how severe a one, are much less clear, and so more interesting to theorise about!

  24. What? Did you hear that? What? The Terrisman. He said Tyrian Falls. Why does that sound familiar? That's where Joe is! Or was, from what it sounds like. And that's where our counterpart is. Ah. Should we go have a chat with this Terrisman? We could, if Quinn would get up and move over there... Quinn was content where he was. Despite all of the chatter going on, he had a song stuck in his head that he was most fond of. And why does it have to be that song! Argh! It is obvious we need a way to link our minds to his. Should I be looking for a spike? I will do discussion-y stuff later, I'm a bit busy at the moment.

  27. This one: Q: Will Dalinar punish Adolin for killing Sadeas? A: He doesn’t know. Nobody knows… If he knew, he’d probably will. Nobody knows. This confirms there were no witnesses, nobody hiding within the shadow whom might have seen. I am particularly interested in how he answered the question... The question was obviously about the future, but Brandon is clearly referencing about the present. Of course, Dalinar doesn't know, right now, but should I interpret this as he will never find out? I find the phrasing to be rather odd.

  33. That's not a safe assumption, just so you know. The Inquisitor in the first run of this game had Uber-Copper, which allowed them to scan as a Regular Villager. I strongly suspect there is something similar in this game, to protect the Inquisitor against a scan. They will have to give up that ability at some point though, since they have to give up a power (their choice) whenever they convert. In LG2, Cessie held onto Uber-Copper until after we'd pulled a Wounded Gazelle on her and she claimed Thug. At that point, showing up as a Regular Villager when she's claiming Thug and clearly has Thug-like powers was more harm than good and would've revealed her anyway, so the next conversion she made, she got rid of Uber-Copper. She held onto Uber-Pewter until her second-to-last life was gone, since that was useless at that point as well. I figure the Inquisitor this time around will do something similar: once a power is either useless or does more harm than good to keep, they'll get rid of it. Ha. Seriously? Have you seen me cast a vote or advocate for a lynch? Oh, but obviously, I don't believe what I'm saying about not lynching, but because I can't let people know that, I've been talking about that, and also been discussing things that don't have to do with the lynch or suspicions. But that's clearly just a cover for my lack of belief. Brilliant. You caught me, Arin. Amazing.

I also wondered why "the Ones Above" wanted either the Aviar or the worms so badly. But @hwiles may have stumbled across the answer! I just started reading Second Era Mistborn with Wax and Wayne (now on SoS), and since there's only Mistings now, maybe they're there to collect Aviar to build a spiked Mistborn army!

  36. So if the worms were to work on a human, and they did turn the person into a focus for the investiture, I'd have to assume that would mean you wouldn't be able to turn off the magic.. The Aviar seem to have a permanent effect on the person and/or area around them. So if a human were to gain an ability, it wouldn't be like with other magic systems we've seen. The other systems all access magic through a focus. You access the metalic arts via metal. Awakening requires a command. If YOU were the focus, you would be the conduit through which the investiture flows. Whatever ability was gained would be constant.

  39. His heartless murder completely deludes this argument. Alodin is very straight forward and direct (much like his father) which does not bode well for being non-judgmental. Honest yes but i fear even that may change somewhat. He may do things and appear noble but he still thinks much more of who and what he is (light-eyes prince) than a person who would do well listening. Yes he may be more than willing to listen to her but if he is upset with anyone he is about as open minded as a rock. Also the way in which Shallan describes him feels like she constantly is talking about his outward appearance but of little else. A for the rape victim quote im not feeling that requires a responds. Thats a little heavier than their being broken and requires far more than just a single person who will listen non-judgmentally. That type of trauma work is a rather poor example in comparison. My other issue with Alodin is simply my own bias. People are bothered by the trope that Shallan and Kalladin fall in but considering the one that Alodin and shallan fall in i find the latter far less bothersome. I've had enough Disney type romances shoved down my throat and another one is even more cliche than the other option. Honestly i would take anything but Alodin and Shallan if only for this reason. My only other concern is the possibility of Kalladin on his own with nobody. The noble hero who sacrifice's everything for the future of the world. Though I don't mind this scenario I feel its happened to many times. Regardless that is a long list of many possibilities at this point. Some i feel are far more out there than others but who knows. Jasnah x Kaladin is one I would be scared to even see. Mostly because I cannot imagine Jasnah with anyone unless they were either an obedient slave or shockingly as smart or smarter than her (wit?) but again who knows. Regardless i will continue to stick to my point and continue to ask the question of how shallan and kalladin are opposites instead of shallan/kalladin and Alodin are not.

  40. Very cool to read, and thanks to all who have worked on transcriptions. A couple of thoughts: The humans stopped the Parshendi from transforming by capturing a very old spren. I suspect this third spren is of Adonalsium, and is the third Bondsmith spren. It's not Nightwatcher or Stormfather (since Lift visited Nightwatcher, and the vast bulk of the Parshendi haven't been released to bond forms yet), and for some reason I'm not leaning towards one of the Unmade as being a 'normal' part of the Listeners' life cycle. A third superspren, one that has been present since before the Shattering, would fit with the Listeners predating the Shattering as well, and provides a likely candidate for our missing Bondsmith spren. I don't think Cusicesh could fit, since he's not trapped in a gemstone. The voice in Klade's head is attuned to the rhythms. This is reminiscent of similar instances we've seen in Mistborn, which would imply it's a Shard that is using the rhythms to speak into someone's mind. We have two active Shards, Cultivation and Odium. It might be a hidden plan of Cultivation, it might be that Odium needed a war to push the Listeners to experiment with stormspren. I can see either Shard as being a distinct possibility for now, until we learn who's pulling the strings. An off-the-walls idea is that it's the soul of Roshar that's coordinating these events, but I find that to be unlikely and am only mentioning it for completeness' sake. The Parshendi didn't acquire Szeth until right before the assassination, seemingly by coincidence. How did Szeth get into an Alethkar slave market? But, he was already an assassin, and the Parshendi didn't give him his Honorblade, that was from Shinovar. This is probably one of the reasons Brandon had to write much of Szeth's flashback sequence, since it has to make sense how he arrived where he is, where he got his reputation, and how the Parshendi learned he was a Surgebinder. (Or, did they even know that? Did he say he was an assassin, and then they didn't know what to expect when they turned him loose?) Looks like Voidlight is confirmed. Not a spren, but pure Investiture required for the Listener Forms of Power. Where is Eshonai's sphere now? How did it make its way over from Braize? Gavilar is trying to bring the Heralds out of hiding. He knows most of them are on Roshar, but he must not have realized there was at least one in his palace that very day. Gavilar is trying to bring pack the Listeners' old gods, of which Odium is king and the other gods are the Unmade. I don't think we have explicit confirmation on this, but it's seeming more and more likely. Thing is, the Thrill is happening in Dalinar's flashbacks, which well predate this prologue. So, at least one of the Unmade is already there and active, right? And the Death Rattles, how long have they been happening? Because that's another Unmade, isn't it? So what was he trying to accomplish that hasn't already been done? There are some cause-and-effect cases I would really like to see expanded on, so it's a good thing there are another thousand pages or so to this book.
