  1. Hi everyone! So I'm a new member and a recent fan of Sanderson. Thus far, the Stormlight Archive is all I've read. I love the books so much I was inspired to compose some theme music in my free-time. This one is my take of the lullaby from Book 2: "Words of Radiance". I've decided to call it "Veden Lullaby" since technically it's probably a traditional song of Vedenar/Jah Keved. The instruments you hear are piano, alto recorder, voice and keyboard (strings) - all by me. I'm totally an amateur and this is only the second song I've recorded ever! So, please, keep that in mind. I'm hoping to get better!! Anywho, thought I'd throw it out here for other fans to hear and hopefully enjoy. :-)

  2. So, in the recent newsletter from Sanderson, we get Lift more or less saying what she asked of the Nightwatcher. I have thought about this, and come to the conclusion that Lift is essentially immortal, unaging. She has, after all, been ten for three years. Now, in the Cosmere, there are few ways to truly get immortality. Being a Returned on Nalthis could count, but it requires having a largeish piece of a Shard given to you, and has a requirement for constant replenishment of non-Divine Breaths. Being a Feruchemist and Mistborn, as well as plenty of atium, can grant immortality for a while, but becomes harder as your actual age becomes more unlike your appeared age. There must be a better solution, or else many worldhoppers would be piles of dust. By traveling in the Cognitive Realm, you seem to be unaffected by the passage of time. I propose that the Nightwatcher put Lift partially into the Cognitive Realm in order to accomplish permanence. This can also explain how she can touch spren, as they are apparently tangible and potentially dangerous in the Cognitive Realm (cite the currently non-canon scene where Jasnah goes to the Cognitive Realm after "dying") I'm not sure how she can metabolize food into Stormlight, perhaps some effect of being between worlds, or somehow related to her bane. However, I have figured out how being unchanging can be accomplished.

  3. Here is my first musical composition for the Stormlight Archive. This is what I imagined for Tien's theme, which would (theoretically) be used for Kaladin's memories throughout The Way of Kings. The first melody you hear (A section) is for Tien - it's meant to be song-like and sad. The B section has some major chords and is more or less Kaladin's hero theme. It brings a sense of determination and resolve to the overall "Tien theme" which seems appropriate for Kaladin. My goal was to create a theme for both characters that brings together the emotion of their story. This is all on piano - although feel free to imagine a full orchestra! :-D WhenIf I figure out a program to make that happen, it will definitely be on my list of things to do! (Please excuse the "lameness" of the video. I only have Windows Live Movie Maker and for anyone who is familiar with it: you know my pain. For those of you who don't: it stinks. But, hey, I'm a musician not a film maker :-P) Enjoy!

  4. Night 3: A Final Stand During the days, the factions’ siege on the city lessened, and they seemed to turn towards each other to release their anger. During the long hours of those days, it seemed like our plan had worked and we would survive the siege. But during the nights, the attacks would strengthen, and our hopes would fall. “...Silk is a threat greater than the might of any individual faction,” the town crier read from a small pamphlet he had been given. “She has made bold claims with little evidence, meant to sow the seeds of distrust amongst our people and turn us against each other. She cannot be left alive to generate such suspicion and doubt among us!” “Not so fast,” said someone in the crowd of people standing in Luthadel’s town square. Silk nudged herself forward, onto the platform that the town crier was reading from. “The allegations brought before me are greatly exaggerated. I shall express myself freely, and you will then see that I have done nothing to promote such a reaction.” “Lies!” someone shouted from the crowd. “Spare your interjections, for I shall attempt to set things straight.” Silk paused, glancing at the general mood of the crowd. They were definitely not happy, in a bit of a murderous mood this evening. “I have been called out for declaring myself a Seeker, despite giving misinformation. I am nevertheless a Seeker, and gave you this information for your own benefit.” “You claimed that Locke was… an agent of the Deepness, when this was clearly not the case!” a tall man shouted. “Exactly; this was meant to inform you… to reveal to you that… the Deepness is once again a real threat, and one that we must unite against to extinguish. This is something much bigger than who gets to sit in Luthadel’s throne. This is a matter of global priority.” “Bah!” the tall man shouted. “And you claim to know about this… Deepness yourself? How can we be sure that you aren’t an agent of it!” “These agents have pieces of metal imbedded in them! It honestly isn’t that hard to figure out!” Silk said. “And if it’s so easy to figure out, then why make such a big deal of it? Why not just eliminate the threat now?” This mob is too intense, Silk thought to herself, attempting relentlessly to Riot their calmness. They won’t rest until someone’s dead this evening. My only hope of survival is to deflect their attention to someone else… “You’re right, of course!” Silk shouted, chuckling. “In fact, I believe I saw Vela with a very peculiar earring earlier.” “Excuse me?” Vela protested from the crowd. “Nuh-uh, you are not bringing me into this! You’re just trying to deflect attention! She’s clearly hiding something from us!” “Hiding something?” Silk questioned, raising an eyebrow. “I’ve been completely frank with you. You have called me out and threatened me; I have nothing to hide.” “She is hiding something!” Vela said, then suddenly felt an enormous calmness wash over her. “She… wait, she’s an emotional allomancer! She lied to us!” “This is not true!” Silk yelled frantically, as the crowd angrily climbed up onto the platform and surrounded her. “I deny these allegations against my name! Ruin will take you all if you take me down!” - - - - - Silk (Amanuensis) was lynched! She was an unspiked Rioter from the Venture faction! 6. First, this forum is such a cool space to have conversation and speculation among people with similar interests yet such different backgrounds. The different experiences that we have definitely feeds into how each of us reads and interprets, which makes for such a fascinating opportunity to share insights and see things in ways that we might not have thought of or picked up on. Certainly, there are aspects of the fantasy genre that are meant for entertainment – I, for one, love to get lost in a different world every once in a while, disconnecting from ‘reality’ and plugging into dreams and imaginations. However, much of the world deems writing, poetry, imagination, fiction, especially fantasy, as a luxury that is separate from and irrelevant to what is commonly known as ‘real life.’ So I wanted to begin, since this is my very first post in the forum, with a word of encouragement to you fine folks. As the saying goes, fiction is the lie through which we tell the truth (I am sure the progression of Shallan Davar and Pattern would agree with this), and fantasy, as removed from ‘truth’ as it often seems, is a pertinent example of lies through which much truth is often spoken. To those of you who are mocked for choosing to spend your time in a corner, head buried in a book, take heart and confidence in what you learn from your imagination, and in that confidence share your insights with those who might be afraid of the truths they might find within the lies they tell themselves: that reality is what it seems, fantasy is only escape and distraction, and survival is for the ‘fittest.’ Imagination is not a luxury, it is life. I think Brandon Sanderson does well in showing this in the Stormlight Archive, making manifest what we cannot naturally see in our world through spren. As said in one of the books, spren is change, or, at least in Roshar, a visual manifestation of change. To relate this to our world, things are changing all the time. We do not notice, and we take it for granted, but it’s true. Cells are constantly dying and growing; when we stand still, we are moving with the earth’s rotation; we are thinking, always thinking; etc. etc. One thing I wanted to touch on specifically, however, is the nature of light, which I promise I will relate to Truthwatching and Illumination eventually, so bear with me. Questions of sight do not usually inspire responses of detailed reality, with the physics of how one actually sees, in terms of what might even allow for sight – that is, for example, one does not think to tell of the light that reflects off of opaque surfaces and into eyes, or the lack or distortion thereof that might affect vision, or the scattering of such that red might be distinguished from blue, black and white and the shades between. For most, light is rarely thought of as an independent actor, but just a medium through which we see. Even for the blind, however, light exists: at the very least they can feel its warmth, its energy – they would not see in the same way because light exists differently for them. The point is that light is everywhere but it is often not considered – perhaps we actually see more than we think. Perhaps spren really do exist. I first noticed the correlation between spren and quantum theory in the interlude chapter in Way of Kings where two ardents are measuring spren. As a disclaimer, I am not a theoretical physicist, nor will I include any math here on this forum, but it is fascinating to compare the similarities. In classical physics, what we all perhaps learned in high school in one form or another, measurement does not change the state of what is being measured. For example, the weight of one paperclip today will be the same tomorrow, more or less. In quantum physics, however, the rules are different – measurement changes everything. To tangent a little, this discovery in the early 20th century has made physicists rethink how even reality works – what if quantum theory applies not just at the quantum (very very miniscule) level, but to everything? Not just physically, but cognitively as well? This is the context I am placing the Stormlight Archive in. Through fantasy, Sanderson has made manifest and broken down certain theories that pervade contemporary thought. In the previously mentioned interlude chapter, spren stop moving when they are measured. This is similarly the case in quantum theory (if interested, look up wave function collapse). Okay, cool. But so what? Here is where my theory on Truthwatching comes in. When Renarin says he sees, what he means is that he actually sees. Not ‘see’ in the conventional sense, but literally sees. Wow, really clear man. I know, I know. The closest analogy I could think of is The Matrix, where at the end -SPOILER-, Neo literally sees reality as the code of the Matrix since it is a computer program. What I’m saying is the Truthwatching is a similar thing, except instead of code, what Renarin, and other Truthwatchers, see is the spren (quanta) of everything. Everything. This has nothing to do with his visions. I am in the camp that says his visions are not a result of Truthwatching since Dalinar, Kaladin (dream), and Shallan (drawings), have the same experience (I believe FeatherWriter has a really good and well-written post on this). This brings a new connotation to Illumination. What “illumination” means is to shed light on or clarify. If Lightweavers use Illumination to create illusions (perhaps because of its combination with Transformation), maybe Truthwatchers see through illusions. To relate, if we look at an apple sitting on a table, we see it as still. If we shine a strong light (must be coherent light) on it, however, the shadow that appears will show a hole in the middle; i.e. the solidity of the apple is an illusion. Or, if we shine a light on any object, the boundary of the shadow will appear fuzzy even though the boundary of the object is solid; i.e. static boundaries are illusions – this is due to the property of diffraction and the wave-particle duality that light has, another consequence that quantum theory attempts to explain. The perfect place to extend this theory from merely the physical to the cognitive, emotional, spiritual, etc., is the space of imagination and fiction, which are as real as physical reality. I think this is what Sanderson is experimenting with through the separation of Physical Realm, Cognitive Realm, etc. Truthwatchers might be the only ones able to see what is actually going on. In our world, our eyes often deceive us. Perhaps to see as Renarin does would be to see through the deception of reality. See spren. See what matters. See the stories behind people (Ym). See beauty. And to be able to see would certainly help knowing how to heal whatever is damaged – I am defining ‘heal’ here not as cure or fix, which implies some sort of wholeness, but ‘heal’ as in growth (i.e. Progression not towards, but Progression from). Sometimes a word of encouragement or a pair of comfortable shoes might go a longer way than stabbing someone with a Shardblade, deposing an incompetent king, or summoning highstorms, and this is what Renarin can see. Of course, this is all speculation, and I’m sure what I’ve written is full of holes. So, thoughts?

  7. Not the throw a wrench in your theorizing, but Lift just had her first period, so that means she's hit puberty and is definitely growing up - evidence: Sanderson is pretty subtle about it, but that's pretty clearly a reference to menses - specifically her first menses. So she is changing; she is growing up. And it appears that she did ask to NOT change, but isn't quite getting what she expected to get. However, I COMPLETELY buy the idea that she's been shifted partly to the cognitive realm, and it's entirely possible that it will give her longevity/functional immortality. However, it seems that her body knows she's supposed to grow up first, at least part of the way.

  8. Trailer for the Way of Kings. Wit's voice: When you beat an iron sword relentlessly, it hardens. When you leave it alone, it rusts away. Let me tell you a story. =o=o=o=o=o The party, camera panning around the revellers. We see spren floating around, we see Jasnah looking disapproving and Dalinar dead drunk, but only briefly. We see a flash of White as the Assassin stalks down a corridor. Two guards notice him and charge. The Assassin bursts into light. Cut to Szeth by the dead body of the King, kneeling. "I'm sorry." =o=o=o=o=o= "We came here for Vengeance, but all I see if frivolity and competition." Dalinar from behind, looking over the Shattered Plains and the arrayed warcamps.Adolin averts his eyes. Sadeas snorts. "Why can't you just relax? Why can't you be just like everyone else?" "I cannot be like everyone else." Sadeas leaves, laughing. "That honor of yours is going to get you killed some day." =o=o=o=o=o=o=o Voiceover: There are two kinds of people in this world, son. Those who save lives, and those who take lives. A young Kal, working in the surgery with his father: "What about those who kill to protect?" A battlefield on a rocky landscape, from the eyes of Cenn. Kaladin leading them into battle. The Shardbearer. White flash, cut to Kaladin shivering in a cage. Kaladin looks up to see Syl floating over, a tiny translucent girl. Her light shines on his face. Her voice: Why do men cry? =o=o=o=o=o=o=o Shallan's voice: “Expectation wasn't just about what people expected of you. It was about what you expected of yourself.” Shallan clutching a sketchbook, following Jasnah. Her eyes are fixed on the Soulcaster. She is smiling, cut to her in her room alone scheming and drawing plans. A cryptic voice: Let go of your lies. (fade to black) (pause) (bass drop) Szeth lashing himself to the ceiling, running towards two Shardbearers. His Blade appears in his hands. Dalinar sitting alone in a tent, screaming and writhing. Kaladin on a bridge run, screaming as blood trickles down his shoulders and arrows kill those around him Shallan in a room in a pool of blood. (fade to black) (pause) Words against A black screen as music builds to a crescendo. Speak again the Ancient oaths. "Life before Death." Lightning illuminates Kaladin before the Honor Chasm, tears mingling with rain. "Strength before Weakness." Dalinar charging at the Chasmfiend in full Shardplate to protect Elhokar "Journey before Destination." Shallan turning from a ship and running back to Khabaranth. (pause) "The Knights Radiant shall rise again." Music climaxes A shot of Szeth running among people, lashing them left and right. A shot of Shallan entering Shadesmar. A shot of Dalinar and Adolin surrounded on the Tower, shouting their final battlecries. A shot of Kaladin's boots thumping on the bridge, clearing the chasm onto the awaiting Parshendi. Syl screaming "Speak the Words!" THE STORMLIGHT ARCHIVE: THE WAY OF KINGS =o=o=o=o=o=o Wit's voice, chattily: “Can you feel it? Something just changed. I believe that’s the sound the world makes when it pisses itself.”

  9. Hello hello, the Doctor's arrived in the cosmere! Anyway, hi, I've been lurking around the stormlight and mistborn forums for a few weeks now, starting a discussion or two, but now I suppose I'd come in properly and introduce myself. I'm a Sanderson fan...as you probably could tell. I've read every book Sanderson has written thus far, with my favorite series being the Stormlight series, with Mistborn era 1 a close second. Non cosmere favorites are Rithmatist and the Alcatraz series. Random other things I like are Doctor Who, as again, you probably could tell (Maybe I should set my title to Captain Obvious), and My little pony. heh. Oh and I'm from Malaysia. Hi! While not a theorist myself, I do love reading all those crazy theories we fans come up with. I tend to ask random, perhaps meta discussions such as Vin vs Iron Man, or trying to create trailers or posters for the Stormlight Archive (Possibly Mistborn as well). I also love writing fanfiction, although I haven't dabbled in cosmere fanfiction yet - but its a matter of time! BTW I am accepting prompts for writing if anyone has them. Also, I'm friendly (most of the time) and quite open to meeting new friends to discuss cosmere with! I love this place already, and I think I'll be very happy here.

  10. Hi everyone! I'm new here. Thanks to my younger sister, I just read my first two Sanderson novels: The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance. I'm pretty sure my life is ruined... haha, just kidding. Meaning, I love these books so much that it has led me here to my first ever fan-forum. Pretty crazy! My next Sanderson book is going to be Elantris and I'm looking forward to reading the Mistborn series after that. All to keep me distracted until Book 3 of the Stormlight Archive is released. ;-) Anyway, I'm a wife, mother and musician and I will be sharing with you some fan-music I've been writing for the Stormlight Archive. :-)

  13. I have to disagree with you, @maxal (also, I warn you in advance that Elhokar is my favourite character in SA, so I'm sorry if I say something impolite without realizing this). Elhokar does have makings of a future good king - perhaps not a brilliant one, but certainly not a disaster you seem to be painting him as. He does demonstrate insight and intelligence - consider his response to Dalinar explaining why moving out of Shattered Plains is a better option, or his reaction to Sadeas trying to goad Dalinar into getting into duelling pit in 4v1. It's also incorrect to say that his character development didn't start yet - it does at the very same duel, when he storms up big time with his handling of Kaladin/Amaram situation. Considering how he approaches Kaladin to ask whether he's a good king, and his calm reaction to the negative answer, indicates that there's been quite a lot going on in his head following that day. The fact that we don't see characters' arcs in full doesn't have to stop them from having character arcs. Elhokar seems to be extremely aware of his own shortcomings - he notes that nobility doesn't respect him, he want to be taught how to be a good leader, and his reaction to Kaladin's words suggests to me that rather than a world-shattering revelation, the "no" was more of an external confirmation of what he had already known. The main problem is, a lot of his issues stem from the situation and environment he's found himself in: he is, basically, a regular - a tad above regular, if we're feeling charitable - person among living legends. His uncle is the Blackhorn; his cousin in the greatest duellist of his times; his sister is a highly respected scholar; his father was a brilliant king. In many ways, his situation is similar to that of Renarin, but the problem is, (1), Elhokar doesn't have his Adolin - someone to protect him, to confide in, to help - and (2), Renarin is only the second son, while Elokhar has been thrust into position of highest authority in highly nonregular circumstances. Alethkar is a newborn country. Imagine riding a carriage at high speed when the driver suddenly throws the reins in your general direction and jumps off. Add to that the fact that Gavilar likely didn't train Elhokar all that much in the ways of rulership and Dalinar trying to shield him from everything, and you have a king who's never had a chance to properly learn to be a king, but is nevertheless expected to stay on top of the foodchain among people with far more years and experience to their name. Yes, on a first sight he is unlikeable, and I don't disagree in that he's self-centered paranoiac and not some perfect victimized cinnamon roll, but the deck has been stacked against him so much, it outright encourages him to perpetuate those negative traits in himself. I don't think there's the need to make a full 180 with Elhokar; to misapply the metaphor a bit, I don't think he needs much than 45 degrees turn. You have argued in the past that Adolin can have a solid character arc without being a flashback character - I think Elhokar can, too (even though he is much more of a minor character). I'm with Erklitt on this one in that he has makings of a future Lightweaver (an ability that could be put to great use by a leader), and that his struggles to overcome his own problems would be fascinating to watch, even from a distance. He wants to be a great leader. Losing some of that self-centredness (?) of his is certainly part of that. Now, coming back for a moment to original post, I foresee with my nonexistent Truthwatcher powers that he'll come in conflict with Dalinar. He wants to be a respected king, therefore he has to take control of his own nation - and that means wrestling it from the man who, quite frankly, did a military putsch and became the effective head of state. Dalinar, who has some control freak tendencies, is unlikely to relinquish Alethkar's reins of his own free will, so I think (read: hope) Elhokar will figure more prominently in Oathbringer, and both characters' development will benefit from one another.

  14. I'm not sure: everything @maxal writes has value, and yet I don't agree. I think that with his 'Can you teach me' arc (as brought up by another sharder recently (just checked: it was @spacenoxx)) he uttered a really powerful truth. And I do believe he's an artist at heart: any room under his influence tends to be something special, whether it is his palace (embellished by frescoes etc.), his feasting grounds (notice the water with the platforms, bridges and boats with glowing spheres of colors matching the current moon) or even something as utilitarian as the Gallery of Maps. Add the cryptics he's seen and all points toward Lightweaver. I agree he has very far to go. Well, that just makes for a more interesting character arc. Though I am far from certain, I do hope, and to some degree believe, that we will see it. [Edit] And I really think this would add to the books: not all Radiants are 'natural born heroes'. The struggles of someone like Elhokar with the ideals of self-aware truths would be really something worth to see.

  16. Words of Radiance Trailer. Soundtrack I had in mind: None shall live by Two steps from hell *Epic Drum intro (Stormlight against a black screen (Thanks @thegatorgirl00) ) THE EVERSTORM IS COMING “Thirty-eight days,”a hand scratches on the ground with chalk. “The end of all nations.” Long shot, zooming on the Parshendi city. “Our people are crumbling.” Venli speaks to Eshonai as they move through the city. Long shot, panning over Parshendi culture and their various forms. Eshonai speaks “We sent the Assassin. We chose this war,” Venli smiles darkly, holding up a gem with the lightning red spren inside “And now it is time to end it.” Linger on Eshonai's apprehensive face. Cut to a highstorm, as the gem is crushed in the Storm, the red lightning infusing Eshonai. She screams. DARK PLOTS ARE HATCHING Aboard the Winds Pleasure, Shallan wakes to see men stabbing Jasnah, chasing her. She screams in a dark room in a tavern, Kaladin seats with Moash and a team of 'patriots'. “What do you do if the hand is festering, threatening the entire body?" “you'res speaking of killing the King.” Adolin enters an arena to face four shardbearers. He is rapidly hit in sucession, each hit resulting in a flash of the screen, cutting to a black screen. AND THE ASSASSIN IS BACK A figure of white silhouetted against black, rain crashing against him. Cut to Adolin and Dalinar's horrified faces. "I am Szeth Son-Son-Vallano. I do as my Masters demand, and I do not ask questions!" A shot of his Blade clashing against Dalinar's. (Pause) (Chorus kicks in) THE KNIGHTS RADIANT MUST STAND AGAIN Kaladin runs across a chasm, whooping as he soars into the sky Shallan draws on paper frantically, tracing Pattern into paper, bringing him to life Dalinar shouts a rousing battle cry to the armies as they march against a darkening sky A girl slides into darkness, pursued by coiling vines The hand continues to write the chalk countdown (Quiet portion of the music) BUT THEY WILL BE SHAKEN Pattern buzzes sadly as Shallan shuts her eyes, turning away from him “I hate you,” Shallan whispers. “You will kill me one day,” Pattern agrees. Syl drifts aimlessly, looking lost, as Kaladin festers in prison, crying curses against Elhokar. "This is wrong, Kaladin." "I don't care." (Chorus comes back in) THE EVERSTORM COMES. The hand now writes “Zero zero zero zero” The Parshendi arrayed in stormform, eyes glowing and lightning flashing, chanting as the camera pans over Dalinar’s army. The sky breaks. Lightning flashes. Dalinar kneels beneath a fracturing sky, holding his son. Adolin kneeling before the corpse of his horse, disbelieving. Lightning flashing, people screaming. Parshendi singing. A flash of light, Szeth crashes before Dalinar, mad, implacable, Shardblade summoned. Dalinar shouting at Shallan to find a way to get them out of there Dalinar summoning his blade just in time to meet Szeths Adolin watching, horrified, as Szeth Lashes Dalinar into the sky. (Most triumphant part of the music) LIFE BEFORE DEATH Kaladin, bloodied, bruised, broken, warding an unseen figure from two more figures in the shadows. “You. Will not. Have him.” STRENGTH BEFORE WEAKNESS Dalinar clashes Blades with Szeth. JOURNEY BEFORE DESTINATION "Something is wrong with your Shardblades. All except...for mine." A glowing Shardblade appears in Shallan’s hands, as she plunges it into the Oathgate THE STORMLIGHT ARCHIVE: WORDS OF RADIANCE “Honor is dead,” a whisper against black, “But I’ll see what I can do.”

  21. Which is worse? Thread necromancy or starting a duplicate thread? Anyway, in tWoK chapter 43 at the beginning, Kaladin is moping (he does that a lot, doesn't he?) and the metaphor he gives for his situation is of trying to get to a city to escape wild beasts, but the city is on top of a steep mountain. Sounds familiar after reading WoR. If this was foreshadowing, it was very subtle. If it wasn't then it is a very strange coincidence. EDIT: There is just a lot of foreshadowing. In tWoK when we first meet Shen, he is described as being "a little taller than most" and "his face a little wider" than other parshmen. Details that were there for a reason. And it gets better. When others object, Kaladin says "I doubt he could work as a spy" in reference to their escape plans. Actually I don't think that is foreshadowing, just irony?

  24. Yeah my impression was that she wasn't changing mentally, but the rest of her still ages. That was the twist from the nightwatcher. She expected her physical as well as the rest to never change, but its just her mind. Which is why she still acts immature. Now don't get me wrong, a 13 year old certainly isn't the paragon of maturity, but everyone seems to be confused by her age level of maturity vs her physical maturity.

Last time I've heard he was moving towards Portland, but that was couple of days ago. Unfortunately I have never met or heard of this redhead Epic, she sounds... interesting." "Anyway," Argon interrupted Rick before he could start another sentence, "we didn't introduce ourselves, time to fix that." He stood up and reached his hand to Kenshin. "I'm Argon, but you can call me Matthew if you prefer, and my friend is Rick."

  30. Paraphrased because I can't remember the exact words but "Short English guy with hairy feet has to throw his Uncle's ring into a hole in the ground.' Best LotR description ever!!! Also, how often is a VOLCANO described as a 'hole in the ground.' This naturally lead me to come up with 'seven kids go looking for their Dad's stuff.' Spoiler: everyone dies (pretty much. Except the one guy who went for a walk on the beach.) I LOVE the Silmarillion. Now I need to create ones for each part... Ainiluindale: God creates the Universe and music. No, this is not the Bible. (Unless you are an obsessed Tolkien fan.) Valaquenta: We name a lot of people, mostly forgettable and unimportant. Children of Hurin: Guy sleeps with sister and everyone dies. Lay of Leithian: Girl dies because of a boy. Nirnaeth Anoiedad: Everyone cries a lot. Awakening of the elves: People wake up. Aule and Yavanna: Tree hugger and Industrialist quarrel. Did I mention that I love this book? Several of those are out of order as I'm writing them at random. Thanks for the inspiration Alcatraz.

  31. Dear family of 5 in the line ahead of me at KFC, next time please decide what you all want to eat before reaching the front of the line instead of wasting 10 minutes of everyone's time while you ask each of your 3 terminally indecisive children what they want.

  32. Hey <R>, I emailed the LBL's and specific comments to you. A: The ending is much improved. I especially appreciate the torn scrap of cloth, proving it wasn't just a blackout. I also like that you developed Magdi and the Traveller more. As people and yourself have already noted, it's not fully polished yet, but I like the direction you're going. The battle scenes are also easier to follow. I feel much more invested in all the characters in this version. Good job! B: As always, Fermerald and Dummkopf, er, Dumkald. I don't want to repetitively fuss when you haven't had time to revise, so I won't fuss, but any paragraph I see starting with those two means you're just taking care of narrative necessities and I tend to scan. C: Blocking and scene shifting and some dialogue tags. D: WInner, winner, chicken dinner--no complaints here again! I know you're taking a break from HTB for a while, but thanks so much for sharing...if it improved this much in just one more round, I'm excited to see version 3.0 (when you're ready to do it)!

  33. Couldn't you solve the american gun issue by just giving everyone a keep and a pair of bear arms, and then banning all the guns? I mean, guns are pretty hard to use with bear arms, so it might all work out anyway. Edit: How much is a keep these days?

  35. Enough augmenter fabrials could definitely make a shield effectively indestructible, but the real power of Captain America's shield lies in its ability to dampen impacts and vibrations when struck (which is why the holder's arms don't go numb when they use it to block a stream of bullets from a machine gun...). (I think they've taken to calling the material it's made out of "Vibranium" or something similar in the new movies; not sure if this is consistent with older stories or not) By a happy coincidence, Shardplate already does this to an extent (which is why falling off a roof and landing on his head repeatedly doesn't give Renarin a traumatic brain injury; if you tried that feat in plate mail, or even normal magical indestructible wizard-armor, you'd still be hurt. I propose the use of Diminisher fabrials! Considering that Augmenters can be used to increase thermal energy, which is literally inducing vibrations in surrounding atoms, I would posit to you all that a Diminisher ought to be capable of dampening vibration, perhaps even absorbing an impact entirely. This would absolutely violate the law of conservation of momentum (as well as the first and second laws of thermodynamics and probably all of the laws of motion...) but...shardplate already does it...so there's no reason the phenomenon couldn't be replicated.

  39. Hey Robinski, I enjoyed reading your submission. I don't really have much to say other than these two remarks. - The scarcity of commas made it difficult, sometimes, to grasp the meaning of your sentences. - The battle speech was good, but it felt awkward for Harth to be saying it with so much seeming conviction. He didn't appear to care much about the whole thing in the first place. Was he just fooling the soldiers into bravery? If so, then conveying that explicitly would be better in my opinion. Hope I helped a bit. I'll grab the second part another time, and give you some feedback.

  40. What is the purpose of a 'Citizen Test'? I can't really comment on it unless I understand it better, I think I like the idea of Brick being unhelpful. I already like that 'character' and that would just add to my delight. The vent work and wiring...yes, more active, but very cliche still. Is there another route he could use? Or be pushed to do it against his better judgement by Brick maybe? Finding Calgary himself- YES. EMOTIONS! Hayden stuff - this all sounds fine and plausible. I'm on board.

  41. I agree with Robinski that Oz's reliance on Brick to move around does make him much less proactive. It's all a bit deus-ex-machina. Makes me wonder how much power Brick has. On the board wanting Oz to go, I don't find this unbelievable. They all know who he is and what he can do, and they're shown to be some power-hungry people. Who better to push him to rescue his mother? Like Robinski, I'm not sure what the scenes at the hospital added, save that Calgary is not there. And yes, the board's children do seem to pop up all over the place! My biggest issue is more that I'm not aware of all the class underpinnings going on, mainly because I'm not yet sure who's who. I guess Pascal is higher class, but not as rich as the board? Is her aunt on the board or not? Some more description of how this city works would be helpful. I can't imagine that Oz would be familiar with it yet since he just arrived in the city. Could be a good chance for some disguised infodumping... And switching between Pascal and Fara threw me off as well. I still enjoyed the chapter, despite some of the confusion. The pacing is still good, though Oz's time in the city is obviously a slow down from fighting rex. also this: pg 10: "The backs of my eyes prickle. " --this sounds painful.

  42. This seems like a prime candidate for Hoid. Brandon is said to have given him a different role in the graphic novel. This man appears on different pages. He is playing music or being a story teller like Hoid. He is dressed like Hoid in Elantris. He is on a crate like Hoid in WOR. And he is overhearing key information straight from Kenton's mouth. Kenton is talking about the fate of the Maestrells. Also, this man sees Kenton recover from his overmastery. Kenton glows white while Kenton is in the middle of the Agora. Hoid would easily be able to see this and Hoid would be seeing a unique manifistation of investiture. Hoid has a reason for being in the Agora at this specific time. Hoid would be seeing something thought to be impossible.

  46. I remember him saying that his publishers were worried about him putting it online, to which he responded "Yeah - but people could alays get it for free at the library anyway". I think he said that the change in sales "was not significant". Another thing to consider was that it had been announced that he would finish the WoT series by this point, which meant that there was suddenly a much larger group of readers who'd heard about him and therefore wanted to read his books, which also made it more difficult to tell the impact. Does that help at all? I basically gave you an in-depth "I don't know."

  47. I have the occasional power of spoiling books for myself. Once, I was reading an Agatha Christie book, and I was thinking, "What would be interesting to read is a mystery book where the Watson-character is the criminal. Lo and behold, I finish the book to find that, in that book, the Watson character was indeed the killer. And I'm not telling which one it is.

No one is in trouble here, and no posts have been considered inflammatory here, I just recognize that this particular topic pretty commonly blows up in general on the internet with arguments/flame wars. So far all the posts have been just fine, but I just wanted to put in a reminder.
