  1. Hello! I've been lurking around reading posts here for a while, but I figured it's probably about time I introduce myself too. I discovered Brandon Sandersons books about a year ago when my boyfriend suggested I read The Way of Kings. After having read TWoK and TWoR I continued with the Mistborn books and found out about the Cosmere being a thing and thought it was amazing. I’ve now read most of the cosmere-related books, I think (haven’t gotten around to reading Sixth of the Dusk or Shadows for Silence yet though, but they’re definitely next!). I love reading Cosmere theories and get super excited whenever Hoid shows up. I sometimes doodle cosmere fanart when I have time, which tends to end up on my tumblr (it ain't much but here it is if anyone's interested!). So yeah, uh, hi! I hope to have some excited fandom conversations here with you all!

  3. I hope i am in the right place for this ! I still havent figured out how to properly post on this site. So, i have read every Cosmere book and short story. There arent any crazy spoilers out there for me since i have read them all and am up to date. My question is that there are so many easter eggs in the books, some very subtle, that i know i have missed some giant pieces of information. Has anyone made a Cosmere easter egg list, or a kind of Cliff notes for the Cosmere? I have missed quite a few things, and this site has helped to piece a lot of the pieces together, but it took a bit of digging and a lot of reading things that were just theories and not canon. Anyhow, thanks for your help, and happy reading !

  4. Night 5: Stoned Tee Wrecks had avoided his death the first time. But this time, he was outnumbered. The entire city had blocked off all exits from the square. He was trapped. But Tee was Bulletproof. He could walk past bullets, ignoring the consequences. Then a slug shot through his shoulder and he was mortal again. Had he not understood his power? The blood dripping down his arm seemed that he had been wrong. He collapsed to the ground, darkness surrounding him. The bloodthirsty citizens began to throw stones and bricks and whatever heavy objects they could find. Tee blacked out to the pain. Tee Wrecks(Danosaur) was lynched. Votes: Tee Wrecks (8): Taniel(StrawMan), Kynedath, Lopen, Alv, Mark, Aman, SilverDragon Shallan (1): Elodin Stink, Shallan, Draigar, and Aman are all spending the night on the streets! You can now send in night actions. PMs are on the way!

  5. I don't think there has been such a list made... Seeing how we already have the thread started, we might just as well make one. To start (and keep in mind I don't remember all of it): General: - The author of Ars Arcana is Khriss, of White Sand - The maps are obtained by Nazh, Khriss' coworker/errand boy, who's from Threnody, the world of Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell - Number 16, any time it shows up, is a reference to Adonalsium having split into 16 Shards Elantris: - The Lake where the Hoed are being dissolved is Devotion's Shardpool - "Domi" people curse comes from Aon Omi, "Omi" meaning "Love" - reference to Shard Devotion? - Svarkiss may or may not be related to Odium - Hoid appears helping Sarene with her luggage near the end of the story - In 10th Anniversary edition there is a moment when Hoid discusses not being able to become an Elantrian with a Skaze Emperor's Soul: - The Imperial Fool who helped Shai steal the Moon Sceptre is Hoid - Shai descries objects having Cognitive and Spiritual "soul"; something we later see in WoR and M: SH - Ralkaest (the unForgeable metal) is aluminium, which is also allomantically intert The Final Empire: - Kelsier's informant is Hoid - The Pits of Hathsin are Ruin's Shardpool - When Vin burns iron for the first time, she wonders whether she brought it to life and notes that it would be an amazingly powerful skill - reference to Warbreaker's Awakening Well of Ascension: - Hoid is leading Terris refugees Elend and Spook encounter (half of this list will be Hoidspotting, huh?) - The Well itself is Preservation's Shardpool Hero of Ages: - Hoid is the informant Vin avoids because of Kelsier's ghost cluing her in not to approach him - Adonalsium and three parts of a person (Physical, Cognitive, Spiritual) are mentioned in the epigraphs Alloy of Law: - The marriage the Vanishers attack is apparently between a pair of Worldhoppers - Hoid is a beggar chatting with the couple during said wedding - Miles' last words are apparently not-accidentally similar to death rattles from Stormlight Archive Shadows of Self: - The brochure in the middle of the book contains a story of a woman stumbling upon what's apparently a Shardpool or other perpendicularity; she meets a Southern Scadrian/Iyatil-folk/Parshendi worldhopper - Hoid is Wax's carriage driver - The Red Rip (it was mentioned either there or in Bands) in the skies is the same astral feature as Taln's Scar in SA. Bands of Mourning: - The beggar who gives Wax the coppermind is Hoid - The woman questioning Wax about allomantic physics at lady Kelesina's ball is Khriss - The brochure has an advert of "K and N" (Khriss and Nazh) searching for talking metal tools for unknown purpose - The brochure has a story in which we can apparently see Nazh shooting Threnodite Shades (from Shadows...) from some sort of a gun - The red-eyed "Fakeless" Immortal of Set may be a Voidbringer or a Svarkiss (or both!). At any rate, it's not from Scadrial. Secret History: - Leras has a knife that's apparently important and may be supernatural - He calls 16 a "sacred number" - He refers to Senna, who/what may be of some importance in Dragonsteel - Drifter is Hoid - Leras knows Hoid under the name Cephandrius - The land Kelsier is in is Scadrial's equivalent of Roshar's Shadesmar; the Expanse of the Vapours from WoK's Shadesmar map - Kelsier meets with Khriss and Nazh, who are there to observe Preservation's death; they explain existence of different planets - Nazh leaves his silver knife with Kelsier; Kel loses it, and it may or may not be important; Nazh's knife is silver, which is anti-Shade on Threnody - Ire is from Sel; they mention guarding their borders from Threnodite Shades - The leader of Ire curses by Devotion - Ati refers to a world called Vax, which apparently looks similar to "Scadesmar" - Leras notes that Kelsier "tried to rescue a boatful of people from a fire by sinking the boat and then claiming 'at least they didn't burn to death'", which is exactly what Shallan does with Wind's Pleasure in WoR Warbreaker: - The storyteller Lightsong invites at one of the parties is Hoid - Nightblood was based on a Shardblade (not sure if this should be here, as it's a Wob) - There's a Terriswoman nurse somewhere in there Sixth of the Dusk: - A lot of evidence points to the Ones Above being Sci-fi era Scadrians Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell: - There has been speculation that the "real" White Fox was Hoid - The Evil is offworld, and may be connected to Odium in some way - Threnody is named in memorial of something, likely of Cosmeric importance Way of the Kings: - Wit is Hoid - The three travellers in Purelake interlude are Galladon, Demoux and Baon from Elantris, Mistborn and White Sand respectively; they are after Hoid and belong to 17th Shard - The fish in Purelake have magic qualities reminescent of Aviars from Sixth of the Dusk - Purelake seems to enable worldhopping, as this is where the trio searches for Hoid - The letter from the epigraphs in Part 2 is from Hoid, likely addressed to Frost, who is a dragon and resides on another planet - The letter mentions Ati, Ruin's holder - Hoid used to use name Topaz - The colorful map of Shadesmar also points to other "expanses" of the Cognitive realm, including Expanse of Vibrance (possibly Nalthis) and Expanse of the Vapours (confirmed to be Scadrial) - Hoid is running away from someone; likely Rayse or 17th Shard - The white "sun" visible in Shadesmar (and in Shallan's chapter headers) is the Spiritual Realm Words of Radiance: - Zahel is Vasher from Warbreaker - Nazh is the ardent Rock chases away from Bridge Four; he was sketching bridgemen tattoos - Iyatil's mask suggests she has some connection to Southern Scadrians; she's a worldhopper - Mraize is a worldhopper; his collection includes a rare flower from Nalthis, a lock of hair (possibly Royal Locks, also from Nalthis), a vial of sand from Taldain (White Sand), a silver knife from Threnody and an unusual gem (could be from yet-unpublished Aether of Night) among others - At least one of the lakes on top of Horneater Peaks is a perpendicularity and might be Shardpool; the "god" Rock saw there was Hoid arriving on Roshar - The Purelake plague mentioned by the end is the common cold brought to Roshar by the three worldhoppers from WoK - Taln's Scar in the skies is the same thing as Red Rip from Mistborn 1.5 - The sword Nin gives to Szeth by the end is Nightblood, of Warbreaker - Iriali faith (from Ym's interlude) bears startling resemblance to cosmeric history - The letter of Part 4 is an answer to that from WoK, and possibly from Frost - The letter mentions Hoid having a gem that "died"; going by publicly available chapters of Liar of Partinel, the stone was an aether - The Ars Arcanum compares Rosharan lightweaving to Yolenian art of the same name - There's a man called Felt both here (on Dalinar's staff) and back in one of Mistborn books - YMMV whether this means something - Many graphics visible in beginnings of chapters are annotated by Nazh, including pages from Shallan's notebook, which he has apparently fished out from the bottom of the sea Here, all I can recall/dig out of Coppermind. Let me know if I missed something. edit: fixed a few mistakes, added a few points

  6. I don't believe Jasnah is as dark-skinned as Wax's impromptu dance partner is described, and in any event, while Jasnah is scholarly, she's more focused on history (with a specialization in the Voidbringers) than Invested physics. Wax's dance partner is actually Khriss, from White Sand. Also she's the author of the Ars Arcanum epilogues. If it were not 2 AM where I am, I'd dig out all the evidence connecting Khriss to Wax's dance partner, but it is, so I won't.

  9. Somewhere, Amari had found a soapbox, and decided that if he needed to apologize publicly, he might give at least an attempt at humor. He was going to be way too embarrassed as it was. He set up the box in a courtyard, then stepped upon it to read his carefully prepared speech. "Fellow students! Today, we celebrate the eleventy-first apology! I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like all of you more than half of what you probably deserve." The only other occupant of the courtyard, a crow, cawed at him as if in disdain, and then left. They said the apology needed to be public. Well, anyone could hear this if they wanted to. Not my fault they didn't show up. "I am here today to apologize for two offenses, the first of which you are likely to forgive, although the second is unfortunately something of an ongoing situation. Firstly, I would like to apologize for refusing to care for Wilem in the Medica. I was approached by him, and he anticipated death, asking for help. I honestly might have given him attention, but in the end his behavior to the fine female scholars among us was so deplorable that I refused him aid, which led to his death. Of course, this is presuming that my skills would have been up to the task, which is a matter of some dispute." Amari cleared his throat, and then continued. "The second matter is a bit graver. I have been noticeably absent from the efforts to seek out skindancers in the recent months. My only excuse, that of classes, is a poor one, for if the University falls, what classes will I take? But if I fail my classes, the University will no longer be open to me regardless. So that iss my dilemma, and I can say that I have been given leave by my instructors to take leave of my classes for the next week to more fully investigate this matter, and attempt to put the University back together in whatever means I can. Good day to you all. Oh, and I am not a skindancer." Amari stepped off of his soapbox, and then turned with a start as he heard enthusiastic clapping from behind himself. His face flushed red as he realized that someone had actually heard his apology, and he quickly bolted off towards his room in the Mews.

He was a Skindancer who had studied in Archives! Someone used an item. Sev (Wonko the Sane) was brought on the Horns but the charges were dropped. Amari (Araris Valerian) was brought on the Horns and charged with Undignified Mischief. He needs to apologize. Pyra Ghetti (Burnt Spaghetti) was brought on the Horns and charged with Reckless Use of Sympathy.

  11. Generation 7: Turn 2 In a metal-plated room in a Steel Ministry building, the sounds of combat reverberating off the walls to a deafening level. Leather boots smacked against them as Mistborn ricocheted and bounded back into the fray again. Tassels whipped around at blinding speeds, almost as much of a threat as the weapons in use. And they were using real weapons, not ones designed for training. Mistborn and physical Mistings were killers, and their art was in deception, trickery and dealing death. There was no point in practising in a non-lethal environment, after all. And while Mistborn were far too important to risk death in battle, they were also a lot harder to kill in combat. The only real risk was incompetence – something which the instructors were quick to root out. The founder may have been one of the Great Houses of Luthadel, but it was strongly linked to the Steel Ministry. There was no way that The Lord Ruler would allow a branch of his religion that was not overseen by his closest minions. But even then, the masters of the art were given relative free reign. They could develop their own methods of instruction, but the indoctrination was left to the official representatives of The Sliver. “Again,” the imperious voice above the room said. The two combatants nodded and separated again. Turning to each other, the two Mistborn bowed to each other and leapt at one another once again. The master turned to his assistants. “Increase the intensity of the training to the next level,” he said. The assistant nodded and raised a hand. From up above in the rafting, a dozen arrows were pulled from quivers and bows drawn back. The assistant lowered his arm. The arrows were loosed, and the Mistborn dodged around them and batted them aside with their steel Allomancy. The hand was raised again, and another set of arrows readied. The Mistborn below continued their fight, a flurry of steel and a deadly dance taking place amongst a hail of iron arrows. Iron flared as one of the combatants tried to disarm his opponent, only to be countered by another Ironpull. They both cut off at the same time, before pushing each others' swords away. One called his sword back to him, grabbing it as it flew towards him. The other wasted less time, and scooped an arrow up from the ground instead. The sword swung towards him, but the arrow had already headed towards its mark. “Halt!” The master said, and the two fighters halted as quickly as they could, sword almost cutting into a torso and arrow merely scratching the neck. The overseer climbed over the balcony and dropped down, pushing against the metal plates below to slow his fall. “Your skills are improving,” he said. “You are both getting stronger . Soon you will be able to outfight most of the rest of the Empire. However,” he added. “You are Mistborn, not some back-alley thug or even a Coinshot assassin. You are Mistborn. You are the definition of grace and skill. You will do better next time.” The two bowed to him and then headed off. The master shook his head as they left. They were terrible in truth. Mistborn had let themselves get lazy in these past years, relying solely on their powers in a dwindling Allomantic world. This art would invigorate them, he hoped. It would teach them to be strong, to use their abilities as a part of combat, rather than as an alternative. And if a few Mistings, or even some Mistborn, had to die for this, then so be it. They would be a sacrifice for The Final Empire, the foundation on which its strength would be built. The weak would die, and the strong would be raised up higher. Such evolution was the very essence of The Final Empire. The order had been tasked to impart religious and combat knowledge. And under the watchful eye of the Steel Ministry, he would not let The Lord Ruler down. They simply would not let him. Generation 7 Turn 2 has begun! It will end on Friday the 25th at 6PM GMT. 12. Winterspell watched the young man rise into the air and fly towards the city. "Well," The Ice King muttered to himself. "I hope Mary doesn't annoy me if he breaks something." He turned back towards his keep, freezing the river as he walked. "Fish, you got that Epic's body?" Fish surfaced, struggling with the heavy, muscled Epic. "Uh, sort of sir. The going is a bit slow though." Labyrinth opened up a small portal next to Winterspell's head, anticipating potential orders. Winterspell nodded towards the portal. "Labyrinth, open a larger portal, I am lifting a body through." The portal Epic obliged, and with a gesture streams of water lifted the strength Epic out of Fish's arms and through the waiting gateway. It wasn't long ago since he had heard that certain groups paid high prices for an Epic's mitochondrial DNA. He hadn't had a chance to harvest any without the other Astorian factions knowing, but this useless brute.... a perfect opportunity. Dragoon would likely be very interested in something like this.

  13. Hello all. I plan on "wasting" a good chunk of time here in the future. Firstly, I listen to audiobooks, so I apologize if I don't take the time to spellcheck names before I spell them incorrectly. :-) Also, Michael Kramer and Kate Reading are amazing narrators. My first Sanderson book was TWoK, then TWoR. After that I heard about this Cosmere thing and was enamored. I then found out about the wheel of time because of Sanderson's work on the final books (which I realize is a reverse of the cause and effect for many). I've since listed to Elantris, The Emporor's Soul, Warbreaker, and more recently, The original Mistborn trilogy and The Alloy Of Law and Shadows of Self. With getting The Bands of Mourning today, I figured that it's about time I join my people. Rust and Ruin, it took me long enough.

  16. Mini collab between Mistrunner and Honor Spren. We meant to do more, but eventually it was just better to post it. Two Weeks Earlier . . . Clo had been wandering for a very long time. That was the only way she could explain it. She’d lost count of the days, she’d lost her watch, and all she had was a knapsack on her back and a pocketknife in her hand. She was a cat burglar, though she wasn’t quite sure if it could still be considered thievery when no one had been home for a very long time. Everything normal hadn’t happened for a very long time. Clo couldn’t even remember the last time she’d had ice cream. It seemed like a stupid little thing to think about. It was. Clo had been wandering for a very long time. She was bound to have a few crazy thoughts now and then. The last time she’d talked to someone who didn’t have crazy powers and a penchant for murdering people was back on the road however long ago, and he’d decided to go to that crazy city with a ton of Epics. Clo couldn’t remember his name. She assumed the guy had been killed by one of them by now. She kept walking until she finally caught sight of it. A beacon of hope and joy and wonder. A face, well worn and beloved by all, set behind three beautiful letters. KFC. The KFC, the old fast food place Clo used to work at before she’d moved away from Astoria. The food was pretty decent and there was probably some left if it hadn’t been raided too harshly. She grinned and broke into a run. She opened the door, and the little bell Smith had decided to install tinkled. It brought with it a pang of familiarity. She half expected the other employees- even the annoying ones- to pop out of the cupboards and yell “SURPRISE!" But she wasn’t here to reminisce; she was here to raid the place and see if they still had potatoes or something. She was opening the third cupboard with very little success when she heard the bell tinkle. Someone was walking in. They froze. Clo froze. So, naturally, Clo started laughing hysterically. Magnolia pulled her cloche down further over her head. Oregon was unnaturally cold for this time of year. Why anyone in their right mind would live here, she didn't understand. Not that she was in her right mind either. . . . Her stomach growled again. Why couldn't it just shut up? Sounded like a dying walrus. Sparking epics. Destroying cafés all the time. Just plain stupid, thats what they were. Stupid job. Why'd it have to be at a café? Epics must have a grudge against cafés. Magnolia fingered her pink highlights. "What was I thinking, getting highlights? Sparking highlights. It's your fault I have to steal food. Expensive little brats." Her irrational thoughts had just became mumblings. Not good. I need to steal more food. The tiny sane part of her corrected itself. Scavenging. It's called scavenging. You don't steal stuff. Not yet. She lifted her eyes and saw something beautiful. A KFC. Her mouth began to water. The sane part took over again and she started reasoning. The sign looked old and only one letter on the building still glowed. And . . . Never mind now that one's gone out too. It was obviously abandoned, but maybe one of the freezers was still sort of working and she could fry up some chicken herself. As Mag opened the door she heard a scuttling sound coming from the back. A girl, about her age was standing there, frozen by surprise. And when she laughed, Magnolia found the situation so bizarre and the last week so taxing, that she started laughing too.

  22. Euphoria awoke from one nightmare and returned to the one she was currently living in. Gingerly, she manouvered herself into a seated position, taking care not to aggravate the dozens of cuts and bruises Insight had afflicted her with the previous night. "I don't want to kill you, Euphoria." Insight had said, "I want to hurt you. I want to hurt you really bad." Euphoria shivered, more at the memory of the sound of his voice than at any of the pain he had afflicted her with. The physical pain had been intense, but fleeting. Her waking up alive meant that Insight wasn't done with her yet, and that thought was far more damaging than any physical hurt he could inflict on her. As she groggily blinked the sleep from her eyes, Euphoria finally began to assess her surroundings. Someone, either Insight or an underlying, had replaced her tattered blazer with a large hooded sweatshirt. The hood was pulled tight, leaving only Euphoria's eyes, nose, and mouth exposed, and she could feel the strings tied behind her neck. The overly long sleeves of the garment were tied in knots, trapping her hands within. Her wrists, she found, were tied behind her back, while her feet, stuffed into overly large wool socks, were also tied together with good quality rope. Insight's assault on her, both verbal and physical, and lasted for what seemed like hours before he allowed her to fall unconscious. Euphoria wasn't sure how much time had passed, but in that time he had obviously moved her. Wherever she was was pitch black, but the floor beneath her felt like dirt. Was she underground? It was difficult to tell. She had managed to sit up without too much trouble, but that seemed to be the extent of her range before her movement was halted by some other restraints. Insight, it would seem, was not taking any chances. A shuffling sound came from nearby, and Euphoria fell over as she recoiled. A light flickered on, temporarily blinding Euphoria, and then revealing an elderly Asian woman, staring at her with large frightened eyes. "Where am I?" It appeared they were in some sort of rounded cave. The chamber was vaguely egg shaped, and no matter how she turned Euphoria could not spot any entrances. A small cot and an assortment of personal possessions, including a portable camping lamp, lay clustered on the far side of the chamber, behind the old woman. "Who are you?" The woman's eyes widened slightly, and she began speaking rapidly in what sounded like Chinese. After a few failed attempts to communicate, Euphoria fell silent. Insight, it seemed, was too paranoid to sleep in her vicinity or to leave her unattended, but was taking no chances that she might turn his servants against him. Euphoria was reasonably certain the woman must be an Epic of some sort, and confirmed it when her powers had no effect on her. What were her powers, and were there reasons besides the obvious language barrier that Insight had chosen her to guard Euphoria? Once Euphoria quieted down, the woman seemed content to ignore her, though she did not go back to sleep. Instead, she sat down on the cot and began to read a book by the light of the camping lamp. How long had Insight kept this woman down here while he prepared this prison? In the dim light, Euphoria could just barely make out a small shelf containing what looked like bathroom supplies next to a hole in the ground in the centre of the room, and a camping cooler and a large jug of water closer to the woman's sleeping area. The floor of the room was not flat, but sloped, curving downwards to where the latrine was. Euphoria was restrained to her side of the room by two ropes, one attached to the restraints around her hands, the other at her feet, which were fastened to tenting pegs in the ground. Euphoria tried in vain to gain some leverage, but she could not maneuver enough to pull either peg out. Why even bother? It seemed obvious that the cave, or whatever it was, was only accessible to an epic like Insight with the power to become intangible. Even if she could escape her restraints, she would still be trapped, and even if she could somehow use her powers on the old woman, who knees if she could do anything to help. For all Euphoria knew, the woman was as much a prisoner as she was. A prisoner who obviously had instructions to keep an eye on her while pretending to ignore her if she caused any trouble. Euphoria breathed slowly in and out, trying to stop herself from panicking. A tightness in her abdomen told her she would need to use the washroom soon. She tried to inform her guard of the request, but the woman merely shouted something in her language and turned back to her book. The latrine, it seemed, had not been dug for Euphoria to use. Euphoria shook her head, trying not to think about what that would mean for her continued stay in her prison. I can't give up. If she did nothing to help herself, that would just be letting Insight win. There had to be a way out of this mess, she just needed to find it. Hadn't she spent the last few years of her life imagining every possible thing that could go wrong for her? While this specific scenario had never crossed her mind, she had thought about what she would do if kidnapped before. She could use those pieces of plans--that preparation--to her advantage. Insight currently had all the power. He knew what his plan was and Euphoria didn't, he could move freely while Euphoria was restrained, and he had the power to keep Euphoria restrained or to set her free. What she needed was an angle or some sort of leverage she could use to change her position and create an opportunity to escape from Insight. He's scared of me. The precautions he had put in place revealed that, no matter how in control of the situation he seemed, he was very paranoid that Euphoria would still find a way to get the better of him. He also had a bigger plan for her, though she did not know if it had to do with his continued revenge or if he had something else in mind. If she could figure out more about his motivations, perhaps she could find a way to manipulate him. Unfortunately, that also meant that she would have to wait for Insight to show up before she could acquire the information she needed to make more definitive plans. At the same time, Euphoria could not help but feel a rising fear within her at the thought of her captor's return.

  23. <raises hand> History major here. Yes, in the Middle Ages "children" is a loose term. Lifespan was maybe 40 years for the average peasant type person, so waiting until almost 20 to be an adult was a waste of resources. All over the world during that time, and even earlier, children as young as 6 were married off for political reasons, used as couriers/message runners in wartime, etc. There are more ways to use a child than to put them on the front lines of battle. If they had children Radiants, they could be used in such ways. You don't have to wield a blade to be useful.

With the other two he didn't really have much to work with. Their loyalty is based on the Flaw, while the Kandra's loyalty to him is deeply ingrained in culture and religion.

We're using the rulebooks that Brandon helped write, so lore friendly and in the spirit of the books. Here's a link to the game page if your interested: https://app.roll20.net/lfg/listing/40530/mistborn-alloy-in-the-roughs

  37. I can't give specifics on age precisely. Mostly because it wasn't age-based but based off of the onset of puberty, which can vary in individuals. Once a child was seen to begin taking on the physical manifestations of adolescence, they would be, for lack of a better term, transferred to a new household... such as becoming squires. 12 seemed like the average age of a beginning squire, but I'm sure it's give or take a year or two. Children would be shipped off to monasteries, or taken as apprentices to various tradescrafts, or begin to study in earnest with tutors and such if they were females with high enough nobility. Peasantry did not really get to train with weapons, which is why it was relatively easy to conquer lands back then. Noble boys would squire, sometimes well into their 20s, but it really depended on who they learned from, how well they did, etc. It wasn't a formal education system like in a university. All that aside, if you started showing signs of puberty, you were fair game for more grown-up responsibilities. If you were a young female, even as young as say 9, and you started.. you know... you could be married off if it was beneficial. It's also highly dependent on culture. This is mostly from what we know of Anglo-Saxon culture during the medieval period around the time of the Crusades. It was also very common for soldiers to take their entire families with them while on campaign, no one seemed to think twice about kids being around, but they didn't really see combat. Squires acted mostly as aides and didn't really go into combat either. That being said, during Napoleon's era of warfare boys as young as 14 were conscripted for combat. Even American history has members of the military as young as 11 (there's record of a 13 year old receiving a Medal of Honor, and you have to be in the military to get that). Boys of this age were mostly used as drummer boys, not actual combatants, but they did see the front lines as they marched WITH the soldiers and were killed fairly often. So, if we compare Roshar to world history, it's not unreasonable to assume that young Radiants were sent into war, probably as the equivalent of squires, to aide the Knights that were responsible for their training. In fact, I think it would be extremely strange for that NOT to be the truth of it. The safest place for those squires would be with the men who were honor bound to train and protect them. EDIT: I want to be clear, they still were not regarded as adults. In most Anglo places you couldn't even inherit property or titles until you were 21. Adolescence was seen as it's own stage, more responsibility than a child, but not allowed to be running about on their own, like an adult. It was the period of time in which they were homed, clothed, fed and cared for by whomever was in charge of training them (be it as a soldier or a blacksmith or a shopkeeper). They had their own specific duties and were expected to fulfill their roles.

  38. Try to randomly mash your keyboard in an thoughtful, precise manner. Remember to use space every now and then. Look at the words you produced. Add more vovels/consonants as you see fit. Optionally cross some of the produced names together. This method is for inventing on the spot. However, to plan long-distance, write down every combination of sounds (or even words) you like. Then you will have a base of syllables to work with. EDIT: For example, Rothfuss may have found the word "melody"... well, melodic. As the character in question was to be a master of Names and the way he spoke was quite different, that was to become basis of his name. So he chopped off "m", changed the end of the word into something resembling an actual name (like that of the god Odin, perhaps) and he got "Elodin". Voila! This is also speculation, of course.

  40. It's really about control and whether or not someone is interested or likes something. As an example, my father would get riled up about Harry Potter because it used "magic" and was therefore evil because magic is evil, the scriptures say so, etc. My mother liked Harry Potter, though, so we were allowed to read it. One day, my mom was watching a Harry Potter movie when my dad walked in. He didn't know what it was, but the bright colors must have interested him because he sat down and watched it and enjoyed it. He found it it was Harry Potter and magically (pun intended) no longer had an issue with Harry Potter because it was "about good vs evil" (translate:" I like this now, so it can't be bad!") And let's face it, there are talking animals and magic in the Bible. Just because one decides to label it "performing miracles" does not make it not magic. Seriously, if another story with a character other than Jesus had did all the "miracles" it would be considered magic. And the only difference would be some variation of "it's not the true power of God/ Not the true path." And that's the danger of religion... of well, a cult like mentality. There is no room for exploration because the goal and means to get to it are all ready defined. Anything outside of that is not only superfluous but detrimental because it leads away from the all important goal.

  41. I think I am not the only one that still has questions open after the end of Calamity. Some of them are obvious ones created by the ending like "what kind of didgerido was Calamity actually" "How did obliteration get rid of his darkness, when his mentality is a perfect example for Calamity's twisted view on humanity" or "How exactly have things worked out in parallel universes" and some worldbuilding that's following the tip of the iceberg principle ala "What's the deal with the other Coven members and Night's Sorrow." However, I also am left with some questions that are more subtle and maybe anyone of you can help me find answers. Who actually killed Prof's class? Coming to the old theory that the Epic that killed his class was he himself. Apart from it just being something I'm curious about the answer to this question also would have worked wonderfully into Prof's struggle with failure. What happened in the first year after Calamity showed up? Not only have the effects of Dawnslight powers appeared effectively around the same time as Calamity in Steelheart Prof also claimed he has been an Epic "since Calamity" not since the beginning or anything like that but since Calamity, which would have been a year before Epics are supposed to show up. The first got ignored and the second arguably retocned. Why did Calamity interact with Regalia? Not only is it a break of his no involvement rule, for which he already has the Larcener persona, but he also effectively came at her beg and call to upgrade and create Epics for her, which goes entirely against his motives as displaed in Calamity. I also have a hard time buying him not knowing about Regalia's plan, so the question becomes what his endgame was for that. How are the Epics powers actually determined? We know that Calamity can alter them after he gave the Epics powers, so they can't be set in stone, so did Calamity just sit down for every Epic and decide to give them some random package of powers or is there some kind of guideline he has to follow? How inert are weaknesses actually to the powers? The way they are explained and Conflux reporting of them growing weaker seems like they come purely from Calamity, yet Tavi and Megan post claiming her powers still have weaknesses. Are they internal to the powers but Calamity just ramped them up somehow? Are they connected to fear by nature or are they random and it's Calamity's fault that all of them ended up being connecting to fears?

  42. I found myself in need of a new book today. I checked out Lewis and Clark Through Indian Eyes before I left Tucson, grossly underestimating how much of it I'd read. The essays were so excellent that when I landed in New Orleans l, I had but two of them left--which MIGHT get me through the first connecting flight to Houston. So, I decided I'd spend some time this afternoon perusing a bookshop. Google Maps suggested Barnes and Noble...and someplace called the Book Rack. Wanting to check out the local store before the national chain, I decided to give it a go. Inside, I was greeted by a shi tzu/pug mix who was as sweet as she was adorable. Her owner, who also owned the shop, was organizing books and chatted with me about her dog's origins (rescued from a woman who had no business owning dogs) and what I was doing in town. She told me a bit about Metairie, pointed me toward the fantasy and sci-fi, and let me wander. Since I didn't know what I wanted, I just wandered. I skipped some of the more popular titles out on display, hoping to find an obscure gem. Bella, the adorable shi tzu/pug, followed me and asked for attention a few times. In the midst of that, I found a collection of alternate history short stories, The Way It Wasn't, boasting stories about "what if the Black Plague wiped out all of Europe?" and "what if Elvis were President of the US?" I bought it, chatted with the owner a bit more, and promised to return.

  45. One thing I thought of when I read this theory was this: Khriss is generally thought of as extremely smart and cosmere savy. if I put myself in her shoes where would I look for an immortal Returned that requires a weekly infusion of stormlight to survive and that has a powerful sword. Scadrial would be the last place to look for Vasher a few reasons. 1) no way to replenish his breaths. 2) nobody on Scadrial uses swords anymore during this time period, carrying one would make him stick out like a sore thumb. The only reason she would look on Scadrial is because it is so unlikely a place, as in Vasher might go there briefly to loose a tail.

  46. From what I've read from the various signings this isn't really the case. The next series, Apocalypse Guard, will take place in one of the alternate universes (the Reckoners Quantum Multiverse is what Brandon calls it). It will give us more insight in Calamity's species and interdimensional travel, Core Possibilities and all such things... Mizzy would be the protagonist of a possible Second Reckoners Trilogy. Brandon isn't even sure he will do it but it could contain things like Abraham's backstory and background on other cities, as both are things he has recently RAFO'd because he only wants to canonize them when he actually writes it. So nope Mizzy isn't really the protagonist of Apocalypse Guard and I really doubt the ties to the Reckoners Universe will be that strong, except for the obvious Calamity tie-in.

  47. Yes. You. CAN. You will not let this woman ruin your life. Because that's what she's trying to do; destroy everything you're trying to build so that you'll be dependent on her forever and she can lord it over you until the end of her days. You will not let her win. You will be TwiLyght Triumphant, you will take this job and rock everyone's socks off, and you will live in the cool city that you so badly want to live in. Whatever it takes, I've got your back in this. Need to pour your heart out via PM? Hit me. Need someone to talk you down from giving up? I'll give you my phone number. Need a place to fall back on if this burns a bunch of bridges with your family? Let me teach you about this little concept called a Family of Choice. Because I am absolutely done with your mother's crap, and I am willing to throw whatever safety net you need behind you to keep you from letting her win.

  49. Brandon sanderson is so thorough in his research, he once walked into a police department and punched an officer, all so he would experience a few weeks of prison to better write the related chapters in wor. Brandon sanderson is so thorough in his research, to figure out how to write a dyeing character point of view he once died himself. He was then confronted by god, who asked him "what will happen in alcatraz 5?" and brandon said "rafo". So god resurrected him to finish the books. Brandon sanderson is so thorough in his research, he tried to experience kaladin's exhaustion in carrying the bridge by running around for hours with a backpack full of stones. unfortunately, it didn't work for him: he found out he could rest from running around with stones by simply running around with different stones, so he never got tired. Brandon sanderson is so thorough in his research, to figure out how to write secret societies he once joined the freemasons. After climbing up to the highest echelons, he persuaded them to be good by telling them some radiant ideals. then he went back refining his writing of the ghostbloods. Particularly prolific authors are rumored to use ghostwriters. Those ghostwriters are brandon sanderson. he writes a few novels every year for other guys as an excercise in adopting different styles and genres. but even sanderson cannot be that prolific without a ghostwriter. that ghostwriter, of course, is still sanderson. when he is tired of writing as sanderson, he relaxes by pretending he's someone else who's ghostwriting for himself. If brandon had actually continued his studies as a chemist, there would be plenty of people reading specialized scientific literature, namely his academic papers. without understanding anything about it. they'd simply read it because they liked the way it was written. Man, how I wish it was so! scientific papers seems written exactly to be boring and difficult to understand even to someone who actually is trained in the field, whose job is to read them and is intersted in the content. writing them differently would seem "unscientific" brandon does not breathe. if you analyzed the frequency of it you'd realized he is dictating another book in morse code. Brandon's books are thick enough to stop bullets, and the army had tried issuing them as body armor. it didn't work. it turned out those books were so prized, the soldiers preferred to shield the books with their bodies rather than the reverse

  50. I think you are on the right track. This seems like a hint at the nature of the big picture conflict in the Cosmere. "To be human is to seek beauty Shallan. Do not despair, do not end the hunt because thorns grow in your way. Tell me what is the most beautiful thing you can imagine?" Shallan then describes a loving family. What is beauty in this context? It is not just art, it is the embodiment of mankind's greatest ideals. Love, selflessness, life before death, strength before weakness, and journey before destination. "What if all that remained to you was pain? You could not know beauty then. It can be taken from a man." - Second blind man on the cliff Love and selflessness were taken from him. “Does the pain change day by day?” “Let us say it does,” the messenger said. “Then beauty, to that person, would be the times when the pain lessens." So if you have beauty taken from you, all that is left is pain, and what you look forward to is lessening the pain, how would you do it? In the Wheel of Time Moridin had a very drastic way to lessen the pain by ending existence. So we have Blind Man 1 trying to convince Blind Man 2 you can still find beauty, love, happiness, and great ideals even if there are thorns in the way. So how would Blind Man 1 (who may be Wit) lessen pain? The answer may in this next quote. "Expectation. That is the true soul of art. If you can give a man more than he expects, then he will laud you his entire life...Conversely, if you gain a reputation for being too good, too skilled . . . beware. The better art will be in their heads, and if you give them an ounce less than they imagined, suddenly you have failed. Suddenly you are useless. A man will find a single coin in the mud and talk about it for days, but when his inheritance comes and is accounted one percent less than he expected, then he will declare himself cheated.Wit shook his head, standing up and dusting off his coat. 'Give me an audience who have come to be entertained, but who expect nothing special. To them, I will be a god. That is the best truth I know.'" So beauty in art, in idealized human nature gives us what? I'm going to say happiness or peace. People who do not get what they want are unhappy, even people who get exactly what they want still suffer. The journey, not the destination, is what brings us happiness. "How you lived will be far more important to the Almighty than what you accomplished".People must learn how to live, before they die. In Wits musings the greatest truth he knows is about expectation. This is tied closely to happiness. If a man gets more or less than he expected in an inheritance will that make him happy? Will an inheritance at all make him happy? Now apply this concept to all human interaction. So does lowering expectations or standards the key to happiness? I think it's more on finding the truth in reality and aligning one's expectations with it. If Kaladin is looking for the perfect leader without flaws and does not find one he will be unhappy, closer to hateful. However if he realizes a great leader is less than perfect his perspective will change, he will follow the Ideals more closely, and his entire world will change. That is from Hoid's greatest truth. We have Blind Man 2 who can only experience pain and he wishes to end it. Blind Man 1 is trying change his perspective or expectations so he can find beauty. So if the blind men were metaphors for the Cosmere shaking forces we have a very odious blind man (perhaps not Odium who knows) hellbent on bad things and someone who is trying to stop these bad things by helping him find beauty again. Since Sanderson is the type to not have pure good and evil I find it appropriate that to destroy your enemy you make him your friend. Or I could be full of rust. You decide.
