  1. In the interest of finding mundane weapons capable of adequately damaging shardplate I thought I might do some calculations. From what we know so far there are two weapons capable of cracking shardplate with one blow and possibly destroying shattering shardplate in subsequent blow. Namely a Warhammer and a massive rock-sling. In Chapter 65 of The Way of Kings we see some Parshendi slinging head-size rocks at Dalinar, which slightly crack Dalinar's shardplate. In order to do these calculations I'm going to have to make quite a few assumptions: okay, now for some calculations: So now we've got a baseline. I'm going to assume that 1580 or so Joules is close to the minimum amount of energy required to crack shardplate. Long story short, here is a table of some other weapons with their approximate Ek calculated: As you can see, the two heaviest warhammers, the (3300lb draw-weight) siege-crossbow and the 5500 lb draw-weight ballista all have an effective Ek exceeding or near to 1587 Joules. The shardbearer's warhammer shown is probably capable of shattering shardplate in a single blow (if it's a direct hit, and not say, a glancing blow). The bows and crosbows have their draw weight indicated (the weight, in pounds, required to draw the bowstring/crossbowstring back). The 3300 lb draw weight siege-crossbow treads the line between a ballista and a crossbow, being that it is barely portable (up to 25 kg). There are probably quite a few other heavy weapons capable of adequately damaging shardplate, which I can't think of at the moment. If you can think of any, please point them out. It's also interesting to consider the possibilities of fabrial enhancements in improving these weapons anti-shardplate capabilities. What sort of enhancements do you think they could be given? EDIT: Added a ballista in the table.

  2. We know how to interpret the table. But we are missing some details. There have been many theories, how some orders are BFFs, how the ordering is done based on the spren type. WoB is that the spren are mixed Cultivation and Honor, there are Adonalsium spren as well. Do they bond, are they on the radiant table? Both the allomantic table and the feruchemical table are nicely laid out. So it make sense the surgebinding table is as well. We just have to make sense of it. So here's my latest theory (with the help of the others put out there) laid out. * There are spren on Roshar - adonalsium spren, odium spren, honorspren, cultivationspren. WoB is that there are also mixed Honor-Cultivation spren as well. It would make sense that we only have H+C mixed spren, given the romantic involvement of Tanavast and (Cultivation). * Spren can bond with intelligent races in the physical realm. Humans, Parshendi, Aimians. * Spren can bond with non or less-intelligent creatures in the physical realm. The big animals (Reshi Islands, Santhid, Chasmfiends, etc. * Only certain spren can bond with certain creatures. E.g. only H, C, H+C spren can bond with humans. * The Heralds were bonded to Honor a long time ago to fight the voidbringers. The bond was known as the Oathpact. When the Heralds broke the Oathpact, they severed their bond with Honor. * It might be possible that the embodiment of the bond was the Honorblade. * We don't know if anyone was bonded to Cultivation. * Spren are a pretty independent bunch, with their own organization. They used to bond freely with humans, based on some attributes shown by the human => surgebinders. Each spren is attracted to "subintents" of it's creating shard. These "subintents" are known as "Divine Attributes" - protecting, leading, pious, learning, etc... * Spren were able to replicate the Oathpact - making an oath to act in accordance to different facets of those Divine Attributes would make the bond (and the surgebinder) more powerful. *** sidenote *** It is possible the Oathpact contained more than one oath. It is also possible the Heralds did not broke all oaths from the Oathpact in abandoning their Honorblades. This could explain why they are still alive. They have been basically reduced in level. And now my (latest) interpretation of the table: * The orders in the corners are using spren that are not mixed. * The orders in the upper part of the chart are using spren created from Honor. * The orders in the bottom part of the chart are using spren created from Cultivation. There are 4 horizontal groups. Group 1: 9, 1 - honorspren Group 2: 8, 10, 2 - honorcultivationspren Group 3: 7, 5, 3 - cultivationhonorspren Group 4: 6, 4 - cultivationspren * There are 3 vertical groups: Group 1 = left side: 6, 7, 8, 9 Group 2 = center: 5, 10 Group 3 = right side: 1, 2, 3, 4 * Group 1 deals with cognitive matters * Group 2 deals with spiritual matters * Group 3 deals with physical matters Thoughts on this interpretation?

  3. Sooo many things... I'll try to keep this as orderly as possible: Kaladin's revelation that he's a Windrunner to Dalinar. He's already implied that he want to help Dalinar refound the KR, so it makes sense that this will happen fairly quickly. Adolin wins in duels. I really want Bridge Four to get the shards. I've got no idea why this would happen, but those shards need to be put to use somewhere! Also, the duels will be awesome as well. Nahel Spren revelations. Assuming that KR can see other bonded spren, Jasnah and Shallan's arrival in the shattered plains will be epic beyond belief. Given the hints that this won't occur until the end of the book, I think it may be the Sanderson Avalanche. This deseves some sup-points, though: Pattern and Syl! Both adorable in their own right, but they have an instinctive distrust of each other. I want to see them overcome their instinct and become best of friends! Jasnah and Kaladin! My guess is that Jasnah will freak out when she sees a darkeyed captain with a bonded spren guarding her family. No idea if it will be a positive or negative reaction, but it will be amazing nonetheless. Elhokar and Pattern! Elhokar will probably notice Shallan for the first time at some feast or some-such, but he won't think much about her until he notices Pattern hanging around. Given his history, He'll probably freak out and try to have her killed for "conspiring" with the Cryptics or something. Jasnah will probably have to talk him down. It will be fantastic. Szeth v. Kaladin. A fan favorite, but I doubt Kaladin can take Szeth on his own. He'll probably be helped by Dalinar or Jasnah, and it will be a great bonding experience for them. Darkness in the camps. Since Jasnah, Shallan, and Kaladin haven't don't anything illegal, Darkness doesn't have any excuse to kill them yet (that's my theory on why he hasn't finished them off already). He'll probably spend most of the book watching and threatening them. Maybe this is where Kaladin's slave brand will come into effect -- Darkness might assume he's a runaway and Kaladin will have to fight him off. Shen. So much Shen. My guess is he'll bond a spren at some point, then try to get Bridge Four to reconcile their differences with the Parshendi after whatever disaster Navani is talking about happens. He'll have a ton of rapid character development as soon as he becomes more intelligent, and Bridge Four will need to protect him from the rest of the camps. Kaladin's promotion. Kaladin always get's promoted. He's just that awesome. Now that he's already the highest Darkeyed rank, it'll be interesting to see him once he become the head of the KR or something. Wit's witless "wittiness" and his wandering whereabouts while we watch the wonderful yet weak Renarin work to welcome the wedding of his one brother. Why wouldn't we want to watch what Wit will do? Because alliteration! In all seriousness, I have no idea what Wit will do, or what he's been up to recently. What I do know is the he's amazing. He'll probably throw some knowledge bombs at a character that won't appreciate them again (def not Jasnah), and have an epic verbal duel with Shallan. There's really no way BS can go wrong with anything involving Wit. Amaram stuff. There's lots here, as well. He'll probably do everything he can to help Dalinar while still being loyal to Sadeas, because he really is a good person. Kaladin will probably flip out at his existence, and will be stopped from killing him by Dalinar and Syl. To top it all off, Adolin will probably give the shards he wins from his duel with Amaram to Kaladin without realizing the significance, because books work like that. Adventures in Shadesmar. There's got to be a lot of Shadesmar stuff in WoR. Shallan needs to learn soulcasting, and Jasnah will probably begin to discover transportation! Bridge Four Commandos. I can't wait for them to become a real fighting force, and get into some serious battles with real weapons, armor, and training. Shallan and Adolin! I refuse to turn their names into a portmanteau. I am, however, really excited for this! I actually think Adolin is a really nice guy, and I think his devotion to duty over making people like him is admirable. Shallan will get along fine with him, but they're going to be super awkward at first. It will be both adorable and cringe worthy at the same time. (Also, props to Shallan for not freaking out about an arranged marriage, and for being objective enough to realize she's not all that great at romance on her own!) The Parshendi. Can't wait to see what's the deal with Storm Form. Also, I'm betting Eshonai will have a meeting with Kaladin at some point (probably set up by Shen) to try to get the Alethi to back down. Kaladin will want to help, but won't have the authority or influence at the time. Sadeas dies horribly. This one has no foundation whatsoever. I just want it to happen. Wit's Epilogue. BS hinted that he says something about expectations, so I can't wait for mine to be blown away. Also, I want to see Wit's sword. Shallan's drawing of Kaladin. Because she draws everybody, and Kaladin is a striking person. I just want to see when it happens, and if she draws Syl in unconsciously. Kaladin and Adolin become Bros. They can't stay mad at each other forever, can they? King T's mission. We know he's on a boat, but have no idea where or why. I can't wait to see what he's up to! The Ghostbloods. Are they secretly an inner-city gang? Maybe a secret rap group? I need to know more! How do they relate to the Davars, King T, and Gavilar? The Black Stone. I doubt it'll be explained fully in WoR, but I hope they at least discover it at some point. Szeth will probably tell Dalinar just before trying to kill him. Jasnah is proven wrong. She'll have to confront the fact that Honor is (or was) real and not just a powerful spren, but I don't think she'll accept it yet. It'll be interesting to see what she does if her entire worldview is thrown askew. What's Taln up to? It would be awesome listening to a conversation between him and Wit. I assume they'll be seen together at some point, as Wit did find him. (Also, how did Wit know where to be? It'll probably be asked, but I don't think Wit will get into Feruchemy just yet.) More 17th Shard! Can you blame me for wanting us to show up again? Some meaty dialogue between sharders would be amazing, ut they'll probably just switch languages like they did last time... I can hope though! Cosmere crossover madness! I want Kelsier to show up and attack Hoid (apparently he wants to) who defends himself with his awakened blade. Throw in loads of Allomancy, Awakening, and some Aons and it'll be the single most epic moment on Roshar. Not likely, but I can dream, can't I? So that was a bit more than I intended, but I don't really care. I can't wait for March 4th!

  6. Ah, Urteau; your home. Sure, things haven't been the same since the Lord Ruler died, but ever since Straff Venture went off to conquer Luthadel, your thieving crew has thrived. Where once you were just a no named crew, barely surviving in the Harrows, now people call you Kalling's Crew. Named after the ashmount nearest to the city, you've blanketed the town in crime sprees and cons. Recently, your leader, Modeft has called the crew together for a new job. He's calling it the heist of a life time and he may be right. It may cost all of you your lives if the Inquisitors catch wind of it.... The Roles Similar to the first game, there will be the 9 typical roles. Where this game is different is that there is only one evil role, The Inquisitor. THUG: They can survive a single attack. If they are killed during a night or day cycle, they survive and this will be revealed in the write up. If they are attacked again, they die… finally. TINEYE: They are messengers and are capable of writing messages to the town while remaining anonymous. Each night, they can send a message to the Game Master. He will then post it within the write up at the end of the night. As long as the Tineye is alive, players can send Private Messages back and forth. Once he dies, he can no longer deliver messages, so no more PMs. SMOKER: The Smoker is undetectable and he can extend this power to one other person each night. If scanned by a Seeker, the smoker or the person encompassed within his coppercloud will show up as nothing. Alternatively, the Smoker can turn his coppercloud off. This would allow them to be scanned. In addition to being undetectable by the Seeker, the Smoker and his target are unaffected by emotional Allomancy. As long as the Smoker is using their coppercloud, the Soother and Rioter cannot change their votes. SEEKER: The Seeker can sense when someone is burning metals. In fact, he/she has gotten so good that they can tell whether someone is spiked or not! Once per night, the Seeker can target someone to learn their abilities and alignment. COINSHOT: The Coinshot does what they do best. They push metals around; specifically into other people’s bodies. Once per night, the Coinshot can target a person for death. Unless otherwise disrupted, that person dies. LURCHER: Where the Coinshot pushes, the Lurcher pulls. Once per night the Lurcher can target someone and that person will be saved from death. SOOTHER: Their ability to dampen emotions puts them and the Rioter in a very special position. During any time during the day round (up until the round ends), they can negate one person’s vote. The change will be anonymous, but since I will be posting voting results at the end of each day, those that are observant should be able to tell whose votes were changed. RIOTER: The Rioter works in a similar fashion as the Soother, except once during the day round they can change one person’s vote. Using this power does nullify their own vote though. They are still capable of voting, but their vote will not be counted. The change itself will be anonymous, but since I will be posting voting results at the end of each day, those that are observant should be able to tell whose votes were changed. MISTBORN: There will only be one Mistborn. They have the abilities of all of the above, but will only be able to use one per cycle. At the beginning of every night, the Mistborn will be told which ability they have and it’s the only ability they have until the next night. UNSNAPPED: You are a Regular Villager, except you have a latent ability hiding inside of you. In the chance that a Misting is converted into a Spiked player, you'll finally recognize your true potential and snap into your allomantic powers. You will inherit the abilities of the converted allomancer, although there is a 25% chance of getting a different one. There is also a 10% chance that you will snap eventually anyways. Every night, the GM will roll to see if you snap. If you do, the power you get will be assigned randomly. REGULAR CREW MEMBER: You have no special powers, but you still get a vote every day. Who knows? Perhaps you were meant to be the one to save the town! Not all stories are about the strongest people in a group. INQUISITOR: Somehow, you've managed to hide amongst the crew. You must have a very good (and very large) pair of sunglasses. Like the Mistborn, there's only one of you, but whenever a Misting dies, you can convert a different player to your side with the role of the dead Misting. You can only do this with the freshly dead though, so the conversion must happen during the very next night turn. To aide you in quest, Ruin has granted you [X] number of special abilities. The number of these abilities will depend on how many players are in the game. To convert another player, you need a dead Misting and one of your Ruin granted abilities. Your target will have a 50% chance to gain the powers of the dead Misting and your Ruin granted power will be used up. The sacrificed power will then be revealed to everyone. If you give up your final Ruin power, you will die. You cannot convert the Mistborn. Cosmetic Roles These are additional roles that players can take on at their own discretion. They do not affect the game play in any way other than to modify how the player posts. If you come up with your own role, feel free to suggest it. There is no penalty for not using one. These are here for your enjoyment, not to be a deterrent. High Imperial - Wasing the wanting of speaking in High Imperial. You must use it at least somewhere in your posts. Note: you do not have to use it for every sentence and you still need to be mostly intelligible. Survivor Priest - Kelsier wasn't just a famous crew leader for you. Perhaps you were in Luthadel during the riots. Perhaps you saw him come back. Regardless, you're a believer and must make reference to the Survivor or the Survivor religion in each post. Drunk - You're never far from a bottle. Heck, sometimes you sleep with one curled in your hands. The reason you drown yourself in alcohol is your own, but within every post, you need to slur some of your words and/or appear to be drunk in some fashion. Cassanova - Good looks are such a curse; one you know all too well. While you didn't ask for it, to you, it's obvious that you are the best looking person ever and you won't let anyone forget it. In every post, you need to remind everyone of what a heartbreaker you are. The Jaist - Somehow, somewhere, you heard about Jaism and knew it to be perfect for you. Now that the Lord Ruler is gone, you've taken up the mantle of this lost religion and in Jaist fashion, you frequently mention your faith. You must end your posts with "Praise the Ja." And that's Game 2! Please state the name of your character (again, please keep it somewhat close to your username) and your role in the crew! I'd like to get around 25 players for this game, but we'll see how many sign up and I'll adjust accordingly. Once I have an idea of how many players I'll have, I may or may not give out the exact number of each role in the game. I will tell you if a role is absent from the game though. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to ask either here or in a PM! Let the Chaos begin! The Players 1. Gamma Fiend- Gamon (Casanova Spiked Soother 2. 7. This scene. (Sorry I am not Sanderson. Be kind.) Their guard included the darkeyed Captain Adolin had been complaining about. Probably the reason her betrothed had moved to join his friends on the other side of the room. That was alright. She wanted to draw anyways. She took out her pad and pencil, and began sketching. Why not start with the Captain? He had an interesting jaw. "Prude!" Pattern snapped. He was rolling around the Captain's feet. The Captain, what was his name...? Kaladin. Kaladin didn't look down at Pattern, instead he seemed to be glazing at his shoulder. Pattern hissed and darted away from the Captain under one of the tables. He seemed to dislike Kaladin as much as Adolin. Shallan looked down at her sketch. That was odd. She had not only drawn Kaladin and Pattern, but also a tiny irate woman standing on the Captain's shoulder, pointing an anger finger at her spren. She looked up from her drawing and saw Kaladin whispering to his shoulder. It could happen.

  8. I just wanted to do this, i love shallan in this book , and this is her book. Also the perfect "come at me bro" from little-thingy-scarab to Szeth Also a very poorly done shalarin moment

  9. Also keep in mind that the force from the Chasmfiend was a bit more spread out, wheras with a warhammer you're generally going to be aiming for just one of the plates. But I think we all know that the best weapon for killing Shardbearers is... The spanreed! Throw a corresponding reed to the feet of the Shardbearer, then activate the pairing fabrial, pull yours up and jab them in the eye.

  11. I'm going to take a stab at the relative sizes of broams, marks, and chips. While this has been discussed before, I'm going to try a new approach. Making some admittedly tenuous assumptions, I'm going to try to use the "brightness" of the spheres to estimate their sizes. I don't have a searchable WoK, so if anyone else wants to double check my quotes and improve on this reasoning, I welcome the corrections. My basic assumption is that the luminosity of an infused gem is proportional to its size. We know that a mark is almost as bright as a candle. The luminosity of a candle is ~1 candela, which, assuming it shines in all directions, is about 12.5 lumens, giving ~4 lux of illumination at a distance of half a meter. As an upper limit, a broam will not be more than 5x the size of a mark, or it would have been cut down to 5 marks plus chips from the waste, giving a profit. (Good arguments can be made for the ratio to be lower). Using this upper limit, if the broam is 5x as bright as a mark, it provides ~20 lux at half a meter. Reading is uncomfortable below 50 lux, and difficult below 10 lux, even when the eyes are adapted to dim room lighting (reference). Modern home and office lighting guidelines are for 300-600 lux for study and reading (reference). This makes sense, as at one point Shallan "was forced to use gems of all 9 colors and all 3 sizes" to fill up her lighting goblet to read and write by. If I remember correctly, at this point she only has 1 or 2 broams left, so for argument's sake let's say she has 2 broams, 9 marks, and assorted chips, making for ~80 lux. (Illuminance decreases with the square of distance, so if she scooted in and was only .25 meters from the goblet of spheres, she would have 4x the amount of light. That is about 10 inches, which puts her awkwardly close to the light source if she also has to worry about pen and ink, etc.) If anyone finds more references for the spheres used as indoor lighting, please post them to help refine this. The next piece comes from a comparison in the released WoR chapters. I'm spoilering both the quote and my analysis since we're not in that subforum, but seriously, this doesn't amount to much of a spoiler. My math is probably a better reason to hide all this: Clearly, there is a lot of ballpark figuring here, but I'm guessing other scenes can help us narrow in the windows of plausibility. Also, wow! I spent way too much time on this. Is there anyone with more experience in lighting who can help me out here? EDIT: Here is another WoK quote: "Several" can be interpreted variously, but is generally used to mean 3 or 4. So a broam is probably on the order of 3x the size of a mark. (Although, since a mark is only "almost as bright" as a candle, a good argument can still be made for 5.) With a nominal currency value of 4 marks, that is also a very plausible ratio for their gem sizes.

  13. “He had dark brown skin and brown eyes, his thick black hair pulled back into a long, braided tail.” “How…” the man said. He didn’t have even a hint of an accent. Kaladin had expected him to be Azish because of the dark skin. “How will I get back if I can’t walk on the leg?” Did Kaladin save the life of a herald in chapter 53? Or just an Azish man who was raised in Alethkar?

  14. First post here, love the site and think it is really well done. My big question is when will Shallan bust out you know what? I had been hoping she would give to Dalinar in a major moment of need, but with the issues she's experiencing it may need to be in self defense. I am also worried we might see a bit of an Amaram confiscating situation if she reveals it. Any thoughts or hints out there on when this might happen?

  15. YESSSSSSSSSS!!!! I've been hoping this would come back. I honestly think now that it has been introduced to the forum, and we've already has a game as a good example of how it works, everything should got a lot more smoothly from here on out. I am going to go sign up for the next game right now. Edit: Also this is awesome, cause now since it's 'unbanned' I'll feel more comfortable finishing up the Short Story I've been writing based off the first game, using just the characters and in-game discussion as material, and the events and outcome, of course. It's been shaping up pretty good, I'll try and post it up in the Fanfiction section of the forum when I get more done/clean it up a little bit.

  16. So a while back I posted on one of my userpages about my Project spreadsheets, basically a list of all the different articles in a category and their status, what the goal for that article is, and any other random comments I had. So far I've got five: Project: Elantris Project: The Emperor's Soul Project: Warbreaker Project: Scadrial Project: Rithmatist I just figured I would post it here, since not everyone obsessively checks the Recent Changes page like I do (though seriously you should). These are probably already out of date, but if you see something that is incorrect let me know and I'll update it. Edit: The Spreadsheets should all have comments enabled so you should be able to comment right on what needs to be corrected, and what it needs to be corrected to. To insert a comment just go to "Insert->Comment".

  17. While not unreasonable, the larkin used by Darkness appeared to be kept in a starved state so as to suck the Stormlight out of lift, implying it must be alive. The paperweight appears to be head. I think it just a symbol of the king's wealth - he has one of the most valuable things on Roshar as a paperweight.

  18. Kurk and I were discussing this on Steel Ministry, and I thought I'd just chime in with my perspective over here. I don't think an Aluminium Ferring can tap anyone else's metalminds without limit... just the metalminds of other Soulbearers. I'd be surprised if you didn't need the proper ability to access the power Feruchemically, and so in my view while a Soulbearer could get past the identity restriction on a Brute's pewtermind, it wouldn't help them over much given that they don't have the ability to use Pewter Feruchemically in the first place. However, someone burning the identity-fixed metalmind would be accessing the power Allomantically, and so provided the identity restriction is somehow removed, I can see that working, provided they have the Allomantic ability for that metal. This is the way I interpret Brandon's response. Kurk asks if the Augor could compound health from the goldmind, not tap it. Kurk argues that this implies that the Auger (or anyone) could tap the goldmind. I disagree. Basically, my argument is that the Auger has the ability to burn gold, not tap it. I interpret Brandon as saying that once the identity key is set up properly, the Auger can burn the gold Allomantically to get a surge of healing. I don't think Brandon is saying that the hypothetical Auger, who has no Feruchemical ability, could tap an identity rigged metalmind... I think an identity rigged metalmind allows anyone with the ability to use that kind of metalmind to tap it, without the identity restriction that is normally in place. What this does mean is that a Full Feruchemist could, say, identity-rig an Iron mind and give it to a Lurcher or Mistborn, who could then burn it Allomantically as a metal whose power is to increase the Allomancer's weight, simulating some of the useful effects of being a Crasher through Allomancy; the Mistborn could burn Steel, focus on the target, and then burn Feru-Iron to tear down a building, and burning Feru-Gold acts like a health potion. This makes me wonder what the burn rate on the Feru-Metals are... perhaps the reason Rashek needed to be constantly tapping Youth was beause Atium is no good on the slow burn. If Feru-Iron as an Allomantic metal burns at Iron's natural burn rate, it could be practical as an on off thing for putting some extra weight behind pushes and pulls.

  20. We are told the relative values of chips, marks and broams: 1 broam = 4 marks; 1 mark = 5 chips; therefore, 1 broam = 20 chips. This is for spheres of the same gemstone, obviously. Add in the difference between gemstones, and you get the extremes of 1 emerald broam = 1000 diamond chips. Which is actually a pretty big spread for currency. We're told in WoK that a firemark is a week's wages for a sailor, which means that a firechip is one day's wages (Rosharan week has 5 days). A ruby is worth 10 diamonds, so a firechip = 10 clearchips. That means that a sailor, which is probably a reasonably-paid working class job on Roshar, gets 10 clearchips a day. Now, I assume they also get room and board on the ship, but still, that puts a lower limit on what a clearchip can reasonably buy (i.e. it can't be worth our equivalent of a penny, or even a dollar, just because it's the lowest denomination of currency).

  21. I was rereading The Hero of Ages and stumbled across this: It looks as though "shadow of self" is another term for Sliver. And what/who is the shadow being discussed by the Kandra in this context? The mist spirit Preservation? Might we see a Harmony-spirit wandering in the Elendel Basin soon?

  22. Sanderson Elimination: Questions and Answers and Game Meta Discussion Here, as the name implies, is where to come to get all your questions answered and discuss different aspects of the game. If you’re unsure about anything, feel free to ask. If you want to discuss the virtues of certain playstyles, have at it. Topics range from the games, the metagame, the schedule, when sign ups will be, game theory, signing up to GM a game, and anything in between. If you have questions or concerns, let us and the rest of the community help! This thread is open for anyone and everyone to help provide you with answers. A few disclaimers: As usual, there is to be no discussing of currently running games. If you have a question about something occurring in a game that has not finished, please ask your GM or the Impartial Moderator for clarification. Feel free to debate and discuss topics and questions as you see fit. Just keep in mind that the Etiquette Policy is in effect even here. Treat others and their opinions with respect. If you are unsure if your question has already been asked, then ask anyway! If it has, someone will be able to link you to the relevant discussion/answer. If it hasn’t, then we’ll do our best to answer it. There is no such thing as a stupid question in this case. Even if your question has been asked before, new information may have come to light since the first time it was asked. As this thread used to be the Original General Rules thread, if you’re looking for the true start of the Q&A, that is right here.

  23. Im a bit behind on reading the released chapters on Tor, so i apologise if this has already been discussed. In Chapter 5 Kaladin is in the kings palace guarding Dalinar at an important meeting. I noticed something on the writing desk From previous descriptions from Rysn and Lift, I assume this is a dead Larkin. Nalan used a Larkin to sap stormlight from Lift durin her interlude. Rysn babsk mentions the value of these creatures, even their corpses. So they must still have an important use when dead. Could this be the key to defeating Szeth, and if so, the confrontation of Szeth vs Dalinar, Kaladin must happen in the Kings palace. Just thought it was intresting.

  24. Welp, Alyx already said it. Yeah, Katie and Zhu like each other. That's a thing. Rachel just gets really flustered when *anyone* flirts with her... Part of the whole thing about her "badass mask" slipping. Also: Yeah, I have a couple of NPCs for each of the player characters floating around that they could find romantically interesting. There are also ongoing romantic stuff between side characters. (Y'all haven't seen the last of Greg and Samil! *cackles*)

  25. To answer your question, Bartbug: No, the person/people that are Unsnapped will not know, but if the Seeker scans them, the Seeker will know! Mathieu: I specifically changed it to Sanderson Elimination so that future GMs don't feel like we need to keep it locked to Mistborn. I started there because it was one of the easiest to modify for the game (working with Breaths would just be weird and difficult), but I'm hoping that as time goes on we'll eventually figure out a system for all of Brandon's works! Lots of new faces already! I want to thank you all for joining up! I hope everyone has as much fun as I know I will!

  26. Hello everyone, I've been a long time lurker around here, but I finally decided it was time for me to start posting. My name is Melody, and I'm currently studying History at UVU. I got into Brandon when my sister suggested I read Rithmatist because there was a character with my name. I resisted for a while, simply becuase the book seemed kind of silly, but eventually gave in. I finished it the next day, and then proceeded to see what else I could get my hands on. I have since read Warbreaker, The Way of Kings, and Steelheart. I plan on reading Mistborn next, but my sister is taking forever and won't let me borrow them until she's done with the entire series.

  27. Oh man, that cracks me up. It's like Szeth is saying, "Is this pose epic enough?" And then Shallan replies. "Oh yes that's perfect. But now I'm distracted by the dude with the glowing fist." meanwhile the soldier at the bottom of the pile groans "are we done yet? I'm suffocating down here!" That's awesome. Also, shouldn't it be Shaladin or Kalashin? you could call the first picture Shzelath, Shzalth or Szallan.

  28. Wow, loving the roles this time around. Hopefully I'll do better this time. I'm Ridge. I do the climbing in the crew. No matter how tall the wall is, how smooth, how heavily guarded, I can get in and let the rest of the crew in. As a result, even my ... peculiarities are tolerated by the rest. You see, I'm always wearing blindfolds. It's not that I'm blind or anything, I'm just not particularly attatched to seeing. Who needs it, after all? Blind people get by just fine, so why not me? And if the radiance of my eyes was shown to the public, all the women would swoon. Sure, Gamon might think he's hot stuff, but I know for a fact that I, and I alone, am the most fabulous guy in this city. The haters disagree, but they're just jealous. But I'm nice, and I'm very careful to handicap myself. Blindfolds, garishly clashing outfits, and overly baggy pants are the only way I can level the playing field. I don't want to make everyone else feel inadequate, after all. If you couldn't tell from that, for this game I am also taking on the role of the cassanova. But instead of being an actual cassanova, I'll be the complete opposite of an actual cassanova, who only thinks he is one. It should add some interesting tension and rivalries, right?

  29. Good day, sirs and madams, my name is Shimble Leice, and I am a the third son of the second daughter of a minor branch of the Venture house. Moreover, I am fairly certain that my father was half-skaa, though my old lady was noble. As a consequence, sirs and madams, I am rather insecure about my ties to nobility - while at the same time secretly afraid to appear TOO noble, due to the actions of the Survivor and his followers. I compensate by sayin' things like "Sirs and madams" and acting much more eloquent than I am (mixing in slang accidently as a result of my mixing with such unscrupulous elements as your good selves), while dressing ostentatiously, gaudily, and cheaply, sirs and madams. Quirks: "Sirs and madams", "Good day", uses Georgia font, false eloquence mixed with mild slang Features: Walking the line between skaa and noble left Shimble caustic towards both - but when he gets his act together, he can talk on a level to either. A go-between and negotiator, with a penchant for turning the tables to benefit himself as much as his client, he cons and swindles as fast as he swigs cheap whiskey. From a frosted glass, of course. Good day, sirs and madams, and I do wish y'all the very best of luck.

  31. Uh... hi. I would like to play, as well, but if there gets to be a lot of people and space is needed, I am absolutely happy to step out. My name is uh, Barty Spiked.. I am incredibly paranoid, schizophrenic, and a compulsive liar. I am absolutely not Spiked. Right? This is going to be interesting, considering how I am a compulsive liar and hear voices in my head. Can my voices speak, too? Also: Do you know if you're an unsnapped versus a regular villager?

  32. So, to sum up the discussion thus far: Physical properties of the gems in spheres: We can reliably come up with numbers about the luminance of spheres, but have no real idea of any other property of the gems within the sphere other than relative mass, which can be estimated via comparing luminosity. The color of the gems is, according to WoB, fixed, but the other properties (mass, clarity, cut) are unknown. Therefore, we cannot yet compare (or create an authentic-looking movie-prop glass replica) of a Rosharan sphere. I'd like to throw in the "fact" that my thumbnail is 15mm across, so that a sphere based on the size of my thumbnail would be ~16-18mm wide and contain a gem that is (especially when we consider chips) quite tiny, probably 1mm or less in size. Scarcity: Gems on Roshar appear to be rather more common than here on Earth. They are probably a renewable resource, grown by some kind of organ within many of the crustaciform life on Roshar. Monetary value: A clearchip is worth about one loaf of bread, which due to economic differences, is hard to equate to Earthly money, though it could be estimated to lie within the range of $1.00-$10.00. Any other points to be made besides these? Thanks to everyone for your thoughts on the matter so far.

  33. I didn't see this discussion anywhere else so I thought for my first topic post I might as well try starting it. (Please inform me if my sight or searching skills are just inept and this has already been started elsewhere, I would be grateful!) We hear from Syl in the released Kaladin chapter 9 that she is the only honorspren to have defied the Stormfather and crossed from the Cognitive Realm into the Physical Realm. My questions about this are: How does Syl know she is the only one to have crossed if -She has been in the Physical Realm for about a Roshar year (I think I am not entirely sure of the time between Kaladin's Amaram's army day's and Syl's current statment). How would she know if another honorspren had taken the crossing while she was in Shardesmar as we have a quote from Janah from the Shallan's Chapter 3 that the spren have cities so if there are a city wide number of honorspren then how does one notice if a few go missing? 2. What does Syl define as an honorspren? (I know this has been discussed in other Topics but I thought I would include it due to its relevance) - We have WOB that there is much debate among scholars and the spren themselves what an honorspren is and who can be called such. So when Syl say's She is the only honorspren to have crossed which spren is she exactly referring to? Does she mean Spren related to the Windrunner's order or does she mean honorspren in a more genral sense including multiple orders? So that's about it this topic is about what you think Syl meant by honorspren and whether she has a firm bases in knowledge for her decleration she is the only honorspren to have crossed over. Oh and also if you think she was only referring to Windrunner spren then does that mean there are still possibilities for other order spren claiming to be honorspren themselves to have crossed before Syl. Finally feel free to badger me about grammar, sentence structure, spelling, poor formatting or anything else I have managed to mess up. Thank you for your time . Edit: For spelling

  37. I have always assumed that both of these passages are Kelsier intervening. It just seems like the kind of advice he'd give, and it reads to me like his voice (and maybe more importantly, definitely not Elend or Sazed's voices). Granted, it's a little odd that he knows what senses the two tin rings were storing, but if he was watching closely it shouldn't be that hard to work out from context.

  42. My theory is that Lift had a traumatic experience (like, maybe her parents died) that left her with a major case of clinical depression, making her incapable of caring about anything. At first she embraced this mental disorder (explaining the "I wanted to be like you, once" thing she said to Darkness), but for some reason she realized that this state of mind was wrong and that she had to do something about it. So she went to the Nightwatcher and asked to be able to love again. That was her boon. Her curse was that she'll get hungry more often than other people. What the Nightwatcher didn't say was why Lift will get hungry more often.

Take your new millions, and buy gadgets and cars and to paint/cosmetically alter your Shardplate to look exactly like Batman Enjoy your new career fighting crime to make up for the money you stole earlier.

  44. I'm not quite sure it would work, but I think there's an argument for it. I'd go full Metalborn, Lord Ruler style, and use Feruchemy/Compounding to give everyone I like my powers. Using a combination of Aluminium (To drop my Identity to zero, allowing anyone to access the metalmind I'm about to create*) and Nicrosil, to store my Investiture (I.e. the fact that I'm both a Feruchemist and a Mistborn). Anyone tapping the metalmind would become a Mistborn Feruchemist, and be able to Compound their Investiture to make it essentially permanent, so long as they have access to Nicrosil. *I'm assuming you don't need Feruchemy to actually tap Metalminds, as long as you have the "correct" Identity for it. This is sort of born out by Vin being able to sense Sazed's metalmind the same way a Feruchemist would, just without the ability to tap it, since she had the wrong Identity. And yes, I realise it's a colossal stretch, but the idea has been playing around in my mind.

  45. Good catch, Marian! Ship confirmed! All you losers who ship Adolin/Renarin and Shallan, looks like our boy Kal is about to steal a third and take home! Also, I really like how Kaladin is done here. Now, I know some of you may say different, but I don't think he's handsome. However, those hazel eyes of his are real pretty. Lighteyes be damnation, those are the very definition of a puppy dog gaze. This man can attract a lot of ladies with the right look.

  46. Id really like to see, Jasnah arriving the Shattered Plains, then goes to visit her uncle, then sees Shen guarding Dalinar. Then Jasnah, will demand that they get rid of Shen(since she thinks that they are the voidbringers), and Kaladin is also there, a dark eyes captain that denies her demand(since Shen is a part of bridge 4), making her like This post has been reported for attempting to skirt the rules is going on!(First impression of Kaladin BAM!). And so it starts, the epic relationship, that starts with dislike and annoyance that slowly turns into love and affection

  47. What if....the Shattered Palins are just that because that's where Urithiru landed ? It was a "Castle in the Sky" (Shades of Laputa, for those Myazaki fans amongst us) and connected to the Recreance or something, it "hard landed" and caused the shattering. Recall in Kaladin's storm journey, he noted that the Shattered Plains looked like something large had landed there, not able to reference my copy to get the quote, but I recall the substance (I think). Perhaps by using the Windrunner lashings the whole city was sent aloft, and it required continual support to stay there. Once the KR disbanded, without someone to keep the lashings going, it fell. Plausible maybe ?
