  1. I agree with dionysus. Most of the cases you pointed out Moogle, while frustrating to us as readers, are natural responses to the circumstances of the characters. There is no way, if I were in Kaladin's place, I'd be talking about it with anyone, other than Teft really, until I understood a lot more about it from Syl at least. There is not a country on Earth that wouldn't have declared War on the Parshendi in response to the assassination and how the Parshendi admitted to and handled their response to it, assuming of course the capacity to carry out such a war (without allies, Belgium would not be likely to declare war on the USA for such an action). Shardblades are dicey business particularly in the hand of a woman, and Shallan is only just beginning to develop trust in Jasnah. Taravangian is, however, one who is overly-cagey for no apparent good reason, but we've only talked to him for a couple of chapters. The highstorm visions, that we've seen so far, are vague. But, judging by the Purelake vision, there is more that we don't have yet. I suspect much more. I think we have only seen a sampling of the visions (I'd guess 25-33%). The first book in a 10 book series should introduce several key characters, provide sufficient info to get a feel for the world, establish some basis of conflict for the book itself as well as the entire series, and build tension. WoK does all these things and does it well. If everyone was open and sharing with all their information the story would be limp, cumbersome to read (because the info dump would not be interesting or valued until the reader is well situated with the characters, the world, and the story). Now if these same secrets are still being kept in book 4, then that is a different situation all together. Then there is lack of progress and development of the characters and the story. But, we only have book 1 so far and I don't see many irrational secrets being kept (by either the characters or the author).

  2. Love triangles are just as cliche as main characters falling in love with eachother. Hopefully BS suprises us and Shallan gets together with Rock or something.

  3. Could the Parshendi have been afraid that their gods returning will also bring back a form that they don't want - a form that is corrupted and would be used by Odium? They seem to have lost knowledge of many forms - could this have been intentional? It seems that everything can be corrupted - why not Parshendi forms? This could make them voidbringers...those who get corrupted assume this form intentionally. Could also explain while in general Parshendi behave honorably - as do spren - but corrupted ones/forms might be responsible for Jasnah's research leading her to the conclusion that they are void bringers. Maybe they are - only some, corrupted ones, not all. Apologies if discussed elsewhere- my first baseless theory post.

  4. Righto. This theory is a lot of guesswork, speculation, and usage of previous speculation, so take it with several truckloads of salt. It is, in brief: Gavilar is still alive, the 'Gavilar' who died was his bodyguard, Tearim, with a Lightweaving illusion on him to make him look like Gavilar, used on him by Shalash (or another Surgebinder). Here is the evidence: Gavilar was not wearing his armor around 10 minutes before he died in it. Proof: Jasnah meets with her assassin shortly after, then shortly after that, Szeth attacks. Subevidence: Armor takes time to put on. And servants. Gavilar would have had to stop talking with Jasnah, send Amaram on his task, then immediately head to his rooms and order his servants to put his armor on after having it taken off Tearim. Why would he take that exact moment to do that? Here's a quote with Dalinar's armor being put on: It's slow. Subevidence: Szeth fought someone with incredible skill in Gavilar's Shardplate. Tearim was "one of the world's great duelists". So was Gavilar. Suspicious. Tearim, Gavilar's bodyguard, is literally not mentioned in TWoK once. Why? Well, if he were dead... For the purposes of this theory, Shalash is Baxil's Mistress and she's destroying art of herself. Shallash's Surges include Illumination, which allows for making illusions ala Elantris. I don't have time to grab a WoB on this, I'll put it in later. Shallash passed through the feast not too long before, as evidenced by Shallash's statue being missing. Proof: More proof that she might have been at the feast: Probably-Herald is talking about Ash (Shalash) as if they just recently saw her. Keep in mind that these two Probably-Heralds (Darkness and Uncertain Guy) were talking to Elhokar recently. They were involved with the royal family. If not Shalash, then allow me to be the first to bring forth the theory that Gavilar is the 'creature' with an Honorblade - potentially Shalash's, which would grant him Lightweaving. If not an Honorblade, then keep in mind that both Jasnah and Elhokar attracted some Shadesmar spren. It's possible their father, Gavilar, could have been a Surgebinder himself. Gavilar's dying words: Read them while thinking Gavilar might not be who he claims to be. Not once does he say he's the king. He says that Thaidakar is 'too late' - perhaps because Gavilar's plan has already been pulled through, and he's gone into hiding to pull it off (or because Amaram went to accomplish it). I admit this part is a bit shaky. Why would the pretend Gavilar have the Voidsphere on him? As well, mentioning his 'brother' while dying would take some amazing acting. Maybe the Voidsphere is a Lightweaving fabrial? (Unlikely, given we know that it's of a Shard.) The theory has issues, but could have a solid core, I think. I'm giving it a 10% chance of being true, at least until we learn what happened to Tearim. Someone ask Brandon please? Edit: Actually, rereading the bit where Tearim is mentioned as being one of the world's great duelists, I'm pumping this one up to 20%. Tearim being the one who died is incredibly foreshadowed and it would almost have to be a red herring written on purpose if he wasn't the one dead.

  7. At the signing in Sugarhouse on the 21st Brandon was chatting with us and we brought up the end pages in WoK, specifically the expanses and such. He gave out the tidbit that "to the casual observer, the mists of densities should be pretty obvious." He also told us that it might require a leep of logic, but it make sense. So, what do you guys think? I am thinking personally that it would be dense as in densely populated, but at the same time... I want to see what everyone thinks. Which world is that refering to?

  8. So. After reading all of that....scintillating material, let me add my own thoughts. 1. We're throwing out a LOT of accusations and suspicions. I agree with whoever (Darnam?) said this game was about trust, but there's really not a lot of it going on. Anyone want to defend Beetle or Edgar? Better be ready to have someone accuse you of being Spiked (Kurk, Gambles). 2. I like Kurk's idea about pitting the Seekers against each other. However, I'd tweak it a bit. For one, we don't need the Seekers to seek each other. We just need them to seek. So we could have two of us volunteer to be seeked (sought?). Beetle goes for one, Edgar goes for the other. We'd have to trust that a Spiked doesn't volunteer (although I don't think it would really behoove them to do so, unless they planned on killing said seeker in the night, but that would put suspicion on them....). I'd also leave the Lurcher open to protect themselves, since people seem convinced the Lurcher protected themselves last night against the Coinshot/Mistborn. However, if they didn't, the Lurcher could protect whoever they wanted (including themselves, or one of the Seekers). However, that idea isn't going to work. For obvious reasons. 3. Going back to my first point about trust. I do not trust Darnam at all. And it has nothing to do with him not trusting me or even being the most vocal. It has to do with him saying others should have a show of good faith, and vote with him to kill someone who there's not conclusive evidence against at all. Why should we trust you? So your arguments have been logical, but this game isn't just about logic. There is a LOT of psychology to it (which is a part of the game I've never been good at, because I don't get psychology in the slightest). Oh, so you'll vote Edgar tomorrow, will you? And that's big? One vote? To kill a villager? Your logic now leaves a bit to be desired, in my opinion. 4. Quinn's "paranoia" post has me suspicious of him. That entire post hinted strongly at Spiked, but....it would be pointless to vote for him. 5. I trust Beetle. He's the only person at this point that I actually trust. I'm vaguely trusting of Kurk and Maill, but....Beetle's the only one I legitimately trust. I honestly think he's the Seeker, and it's solely because he pegged Gambles as a regular villager. Granted, both of them could be lying, but....I doubt it. I have to trust someone at some time, and he's the only one that seems deserving of it right now. 6. Edgar. At first, his confession to being Seeker got me thinking he had to be telling the truth, and when he admitted that his first seek was inconclusive, I figured it might be because he thought the smoker was involved. Which is still possible. But he hasn't come forward yet, and until he does (assuming he does), he's the one I'm leaning most toward. Anyway. I'm hesitant to really lock anything in place right now, but.....I'm gonna say Edgar just in case I don't get back around here (which I don't think will happen, but you never know). Regardless, if Edgar survives (as I think he will, which is REALLY unfortunate to the state of my trust), we're gonna need to test his seeking skills. And Darnam, before you say I'm accusing you of being wrong to ask people to trust you, and then I go begging for your trust: I'm not. Go ahead and vote however you want. Heck, if you want to vote for me, go right ahead. I'm on your list too. In fact, it might actually be better to kill me than kill a Seeker. I have no powers, so we won't be losing anything.... But I personally think everyone should vote however they want, rather than be forced into voting for someone they don't really think is Spiked, simply to get someone tomorrow. If tonight goes how I fear it will, we're gonna lose a couple villagers, and that'll put us on the fast track to losing. But if that's how it happens, that's how it happens.

  10. @Natans: Yes, yes. I accept full responsibility for the thing which I have unleashed. Oh also, I should maybe post this here instead of just in a back thread where very few people are going to find it. I've been writing a bunch of keteks recently and decided to try writing one for the released chapters. It's kinda loose and not terribly elegant, but I'm sick of messing with it so I'm gonna go ahead and call it done. It's Jasnah themed:

  11. Whilst rereading WoK I found this death quote at the beginning of chapter 53: "He must pick it up, the fallen title! The tower, the crown, and the spear!" I personally find it an interesting quote that most likely refers to Kaladin due to the spear. I think it may refer to Kaladin going to Urithiru (the tower), becoming head of the KR (the crown) and collecting a special spear, a shardspear perhaps? Just curious as to what your thoughts are?

  12. Aluminum- and by extension, chromium- are both metals that are very interesting Feruchemically (luck and identity, woot), but rather uninteresting Allomantically. OR SO WE THOUGHT. This theory operates under two givens: 1. That duralumin (and nicrosil) act by "increasing the filter size" of another metal, allowing more of Preservation's power to flow through into the burner. 2. That the process of burning a metal without enhancement converts the metal to mundane energy (likely heat energy, hense the phrase "burning" a metal). The thought hit me like a pewter-punch to the face during my Hero of Ages reread earlier today- how exactly do aluminum and chromium erase the other metals? It must remove them from the stomach entirely, or Vin would have gotten sick from metal poisoning the night after burning Aluminum in Mistborn: The Final Empire. However, it doesn't do so like Duralumin does. Aluminum doesn't allow the energy usually gained by burning a metal to enter the burner. Since energy cannot be created or destroyed, this leaves two possiblilities: 1. Aluminum reroutes the energy that would be released back into Preservation (boring, lets move on) 2. Aluminum removes Preservation's investiture before converting the metals to energy Or, in other words, it manipulates the metal's Spiritual aspect so that it no longer has Preservation in it. An explaination of my reasoning can be found here: If the second possibility is the case, and aluminum/chromium can manipulate the Spiritual Realm and/or Investiture, then all sorts of things become possible. A chromium misting with enough power (hemalurgy or duralumin/nicrosil could help) could mess with other magic systems than Allomancy with more control of the power. They might be able to create color that an Awakener couldn't drain, or partially complete the process of burning aluminum to create "dud metals," which would look like Allomantic metals in the physical realm but would be unburnable. Perhaps they could even change the spiritual aspects of mists or stormlight, turning them into more mundane mists or light. Who knows what might be possible by changing the spiritual aspects of things. Any thoughts? EDIT: As of yet, we have no precedent that Chromium can affect things outside of a body. However, it does affect the metals, not the body itself, and it seems arbitrary that only things inside a person's stomach can have their Spiritual aspects manipulated. Therefore, I propose that the body only acts as a "focus", allowing the chromium burner easier access to the metals. If this is the case, it stands to reason that with sufficient power one could bypass the need for a focus and use Chromium on things outside a body as well. EDIT 2, on the background of this theory: Originally, this theory's link in my signature was not a link. It was just a silly thing I added for fun, thinking “duralumin and aluminum, ha, how useless." Then I wondered, "well, actually..."

  13. Nothing much to this theory, just a little connection between Kaladin's ability to hold Stormlight and the Radiants. It's commonly accepted that the more Ideals you swear, the greater your ability to hold Stormlight (or be more efficient with it?) becomes. My theory is simply that by the point the Radiants swear all five Ideals, their ability to hold Stormlight is such that they will effectively never run out. They'll always have a low-grade burn on like Kaladin, and over time it 'stains' their eyes into a lighter color, sort of like becoming a savant in Mistborn if you keep burning a metal. Constantly having Investiture going through you apparently has physical effects - I theorize that these result in a lighter eye color, and it wouldn't surprise me to learn the Radiants had other perks, like being immortal. Oh, and because this is a physical change (likely to your sDNA), this would likely be inherited by your children, so I'd guess that all lighteyes are descended from Radiants who held enough Stormlight to have this change occur.

  14. Dude, if the roles were reversed, I'd probably be doing the exact same thing. It's the logical conclusion. You're wrong, but....you don't trust me, and that's chill. I think the part I find the funniest, is that because you just voted for me, all of a sudden, I trust you as much as I currently trust Beetle. Although, I think your last post about offering yourself up has a lot to do with that stamp of approval too.... EDIT: No. It's Iron Man. Batman is a VERY close second, but it's Iron Man.

  17. Moogle, there are at least in-universe reasons that make sense for a lot of things: Kaladin's distrust of the nobility which is a central point of his character arc, Taravingian being pretty much a bad guy doing the opposite of journey before destination and overwhelming hubris (only I can save the world), Shallan not admitting to murder makes a lot of sense, etc. In say Wheel of Time, best friends would treat each other like children despite all evidence of competence, lovers would behave like they hated each other and never talk to each other ever, and no one would ever seek out help in the face of overwhelming odds no matter what, and untrained children would be sent to take on the equivalent of demi-gods. So yea it is refreshing.

  18. Aether had always prided himself in his work as a scholar, and he felt that his particular talents would be of good use in this crisis. "I have here a tally of the final votes from yesterday," he declared to no particular person as he nailed his moderately sized piece of paper onto a wall in the town square: Grayv - 7 (Edgar, Aether, Clancy, Beetle, Quinn, Wilson, Mat) Mat - 3 (Maill, Gambles, Porridge, Edgar) Porridge - 1 (Kukri) Beetle - 1 (Dyring) Quinn - 1 (Jason) Kukri - 0 (Maill) Abstained from voting - 1 (Darnam, Porridge) The scholar then pulled out a much longer sheet and hung it up, next to the other one. "This list, on the other hand, maps the deliberation and voting, as well as any voiced suspicion and change of votes. It is all set up chronologically. Perhaps a closer study of these sequence events could help us identify who amongst us has fiendish motives.": Porridge voiced his suspicion of Aether and Edgar, but didn't vote.1 Kukri gave the first and only vote to Porridge.2 Maill voted Kukri, but later rescinded his vote.3 Gambles gave the first vote to Mat.4 Maill finally voted Mat.5 Edgar voted Mat, but later rescinded his vote.6 Porridge didn't want to vote.7 Quinn gave the first vote to Grayv.8 dyring gave the first and only vote to Beetle.9 Beetle voted Grayv.10 Wilson voted Grayv, though also suspicions of Mat. There's now a tie.11 Porridge broke the tie by finally voting for Mat.12 Edgar glued together the tie by voting for Grayv.13 Jason gave the first and only vote to Quinn.14 Clancy broke the tie (again) by voting Grayv.15 Aether voted Grayv.16 Mat voted Grayv.17 Darnam abstained from voting.18 Something might have been missed (especially voiced suspicions). If so, feel free to tell me, and I shall add them to my list. EDIT: Now, note that the five of us were voted for: Grayv, Mat, Porridge, Beetle and Quinn; and three more were suspected and/or voted for at some point: Aether, Edgedancer and Kukri. The villagers who are still alive and escaped suspicion are: Maill, Gambles, dyring, Wilson, Clancy and Darnam. Now, it is slightly strange that there were already three votes for Mat - a rather strong majority at this point - before anyone voted for Grayv, though I think this was because most of us was voting for RP reasons anyway. But what I find really suspicious is how much the votes swung in and out of a tie. Now, we know that Grayv was not spiked, and if we assume for a second that Mat is, this could indicate that his fellow Spiked villagers were trying to swing the vote away from him, which would implicate any one of at least Quinn, Beetle, Wilson (who made the tie), Edgar (who remade the tie) and Clancy (who broke the tie). I am excluding myself and Mat since I was voting with the majority at this point, and Mat because he would obviously not vote for himself. However, if we allow for the possibility that both Mat and Grayv were/are normal villagers, then this curious back and forth voting could be the result of either 1. random chance, which makes it impossible to determined who, if any, of the voters for them are Spiked, other than perhaps if they just left it to mob rule and preferred to vote for someone else - such as Kukri and dyring - just so sow dissent; or 2. they profited on the mob rule and voted both sides to sow confusion, which would make the tie creators and breakers - Wilson, Porridge, Edgar and Clancy - the most suspicious ones, though any of the original voters - Gambles and Quinn - could also be spiked. Truth is, you can find any number of reasons to vote for whomever at this point, which is why I find it more useful to look closer at the more outspoken and certain ones, or try to find out who's the Seeker(s) and use his(their) knowledge to locate the spiked ones. EDIT 2: Added rescinded and abstained votes to the first list. EDIT 2: Added a missing word.

  19. Day 2 (Beggars can’t be Choosers) Jason considered himself a very practical man. When one has to live on the streets, one learns how to separate things into needs and desires. That’s why, while everyone else talked and blustered, he would sit quietly and watch. He knew what the towns needs were. They needed to find those who were sabotaging their ability to defend against the Koloss. After the day though, he realized that all they really desired was revenge. The image of the crowd, calling for blood, followed him as he made his way through the alleyways towards his prefered sleeping spot. It wasn’t much, just another section of an alley, but the wall was connected to Edgar’s forge and there was a slight overhang to help keep off the rain. “Fools, the lot of them,” he snorted. “They need to stop letting their nerves get the better of them or else we’re all doomed.” Maybe next time, he’d have to speak up. He didn’t like being the center of attention, but if the rest of them couldn’t be reasonable, then he’d have to do it. He had just about reached his spot when he heard a sound that no beggar would mistake; the sound of a ringing coin. It was coming from just around the next corner. He peeked around the edge to see someone in a hooded cloak, flipping a single coin into the air and catching it. It was difficult to tell in the mists, but it looked like the cloaked figure was watching and waiting for something. Could this be one of the traitors, out to butcher someone else? Surprisingly, Jason found himself compelled to stay and see what was happening. It didn’t take long before he saw another figure walking down the street. The mists were a little lighter tonight, but even so, Jason couldn’t make out who it was. The newcomer was apparently oblivious to the trap he was about to walk into. Just before Jason could call out in warning, the coin the hooded stranger was flipping stopped in mid flip and shot out of the alley at a blinding speed. “And they claim another one of us,” Jason thought, as the coin whipped through the mist towards its target. At the very last moment, the newcomer seemed to be pushed to the side by unseen hands and the coin whizzed past him. It was too far away to tell, but Jason could almost sense the sudden panic in their stance. The stranger cursed and pulled out a few more coins, throwing them out in front of him and then pushing on them. Then newcomer was pushed again, barely dodging the coins before starting to run. The stranger rushed out of the alley after him and Jason ran up to where he had been standing. It was one thing to hear of these strange powers called Allomancy and entirely another to see them happening right in front of him. The stranger had another set of coins at the ready and there was nowhere for the newcomer to hide along the street. Just before the stranger threw out his third attempt, the newcomer seemed to stop in his tracks and fly backwards and upwards. The stranger had to throw himself out of the way or be kicked in the head. The newcomer flew up and over the roof of one of the buildings and fell out of sight. Jason followed his flight with his jaw hanging open. “Amazing, isn’t it,” whispered a voice behind him. Jason nodded, then jumped in startlement. He started to turn towards the voice, but the dagger slit his throat before he had done more than turn his head. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jason was just a REGULAR VILLAGER. Day 2 begins! I think the 36 hours worked out pretty well, so we’ll continue with that. I may not be able to post the write ups exactly on time, but any vote made after 36 hours from this post will not be counted. Link to Updated Player List

  20. I was somewhat surprised that there are so many people who support this pair so strongly. It felt a bit like a desperate shot at the dark to me, but while I made my rebuttal comment, I was almost convinced myself that Shallarin was inevitable. That was a weird moment, really. But in the end, I remain unconverted. Renarin and Shallan actually are very compatible with each other. They are both very clever people, negatively influenced by their family, and they both stuck me as wallflowers. It will be nice to see them come out fully from their shells and shine, maybe with each other. Since both Shallan and Renarin are both nobility from two respectable Houses, they are also a match for each other if they ever decide to tie to knot. But. They are so similiar in so many ways that if a relationship were to blossom between them, they will be no more than close friends. I feel that Shallan is the type to go for excitement rather than dedication. This is pretty common. I mean, she's what, fifteen in the book, but in spite of the other guys in her life, she fell pretty hard for twenty-something ardent who later turned out to be a member of a secret organization. It's only one example, but it's the start of a pattern. Because of how she lived her life and her father died, it's almost certain that she has a bit (or a lot) of a daddy-issue. So, rather than spending her time trying to coax a shy Renarin, I think she'll rather shoot for someone else, like Adolin or Kaladin. If she feels especially adventurous, maybe Elhokar himself. And yes, I know he's married. And about twenty years older than her. I really doubt this will happen, but I won't know for sure until the release of the next book. As for those who scorn the idea of Adolin and Shallan, I might remind you that opposites do attract in real life. There is a very fine line between hate and love, and all it takes to cross one with the other is a right moment.

  21. I didn't get that impression. I got the impression that all three Realms are just different ways of viewing the same thing. There is no effective separation between them, and you can't go and visit them because you're already there! There is no way to travel into Shadesmar physically. It's just like getting a new pair of eyes that don't see visible light, but instead you see ultraviolet. And arms that can only affect ultraviolet... things. Er, this analogy sort of broke down. The impression I got was that these 'spren cities' will likely have a close analogue in the physical. You can't alter one without altering the other, which is how Soulcasting works - you alter the Cognitive, and the Physical has to follow the changes you just made, because you didn't just alter Shadesmar, you altered the 'real world', of which the Physical is just one way of looking at it. Shadesmar just provides a convenient way to Soulcast. Soulcasting on the Physical would involve looking at the individual atoms of the thing you're trying to create, and figuring out how to rearrange them, and that's hard. But you can take a shortcut, and abstract your thinking in Shadesmar, which lets you think in terms of 'cup, become blood' rather than 'bunch of atoms, become another bunch of atoms arranged in this very specific way with this electron configuration'. And of course, if you 'move about' in Shadesmar, you should be able to move yourself in the Physical, because they're the same thing, you're just using different legs, as it were. Ones that walk faster when there's no minds near yours, which would let you effectively 'teleport', but it wouldn't be instantaneous. For example, you'll find these spren cities expressed as a different way of thinking for a human host, or something. The spren alter Shadesmar, but what they're altering corresponds to someone's mind, and so on. A spren city set up, based on someone's mind, might cause them to become a more organized person, or perhaps change their personality. Or perhaps a spren city would correspond to multiple people's minds, which would almost guarantee that spren cities are in the same locations as human cities. If someone's angry, there might be a storm in Shadesmar, or hey this relationship sounds like it could be used by the Voidbringers to 'possess' someone. I'm thoroughly confusing myself. This post sort of rambled. I'll leave this post as a nice stream of consciousness, though.

  22. I wasn't able to find a list of all of the names Brandon has given Peter over the years, so I tried to make one myself. Did I miss anything? There are no acknowledgements in any of his short stories, the Wheel of Time books, and the second Alcatraz book (At least, my copy). Peter is in the acknowledgements with no special name in Elantris, the first and third Alcatraz books, and The Well of Ascension. All others are in order, as best I could figure, of publication. They are capitalized or not as per the books. He is the: incalculable (Mistborn: The Final Empire) Indivisible (The Hero of Ages) insoluble (Warbreaker) Inevitable (The Way of Kings) Indefinable, Indispensable (Alcatraz Versus the Shattered Lens) infused (Infinity Blade: Awakening) Inseparable (The Alloy of Law) incumbent (Legion) interpolated (The Emperor's Soul) intermittent (The Rithmatist) infinite (Infinity Blade: Redemption) incandescent (Steelheart) incumbent (Words of Radiance--yes, I know it's a repeat.) Inserted (Sixth of the Dusk) Inscrutable (Legion: Skin Deep) Insurmountable (Firefight) Ineffable (Shadows For Silence/Perfect State) Instant (Shadows of Self) Immaculate (The Bands of Mourning) incredulous (Mistborn: Secret History) ininsouciant (Calamity) Intrepid (Alcatraz 1 rerelease) inconspicuous (Alcatraz 2 rerelease) influential (Alcatraz 3 rerelease) inaugural (Alcatraz 5) Inciting (Arcanum Unbounded) indisputable (Snapshot) invokable (Dreamer) Peter Ahlstrom. Edit: Here's the explanation Darnam mentioned, explaining how these began. http://brandonsanderson.com/annotation-mistborn-3-acknowledgments/ More names of the Peter: From the Coppermind: "There's "Ahstrom Square" in Luthadel, and a "Lord Peterus" in Alloy of Law. In Alcatraz, the green jacket Alcatraz wears is actually Peter's green jacket." He is also Peet from the Bridge 4 crew, described as solid and reliable. From Aether:

  24. The following sections seem interesting together. Jasnah seems to have had an interesting history about which we get only glimpses. When Jasnah kills the four thieves (tWoK chapter 36): Chapter 1, WoR Jasnah loses her poise at the thought of being beholden to a man? Does it seem like being sold into slavery to her? Prologue, WoR Is Amaram one of the men she has a negative history with? Maybe Kaladin is not the only one who has seen his dark side.

  25. So, I am an aspiring Fantasy writer, and a few people I know suggested putting my work here. There's a brief introduction on my site, but essentially it's a YA Fantasy novel I wrote for NaNoWriMo. Anyone who wants to read and comment, THANKS!!! Follow the instructions on the site. https://sites.google.com/site/starslashmark1 Or, for you fellow Sharders, you can leave your comments here. Thanks in advance to any helpers!

  26. I leave you all alone for one day while I'm at school and look what happens. Shame on all of you bloodthirsty murderers! Do try to remember that this is meant to be fun, guys. I know it's not always easy, but try not to take things too personally. Think about it like this; you wouldn't shun someone for life because they picked the wrong superhero between Batman or Ironman (the right answer is Ironman, by the way), so no one is going to hold it against you for your arguments here. That said, I'm going to have to come up with an amazing write up for the sheer amount of craziness of this Day cycle! There! Are you happy now? You've put even more pressure on me to make things as awesome as possible! Maill- I'll check in with Porridge, but I can't make him come in and vote, of course. You guys still have ~9 hours left, so he might show up on his own. Wilson- That's part of the fun! That's also why there are so many different roles out there to play with. Most of them are designed to help the Villagers. Edit: Me not add well. Me no gooder wif speling ether.

  27. 3) You have an object containing another object in the physical. In Shadesmar, you have what each object represents. So each possible combination will be another bead. So you have a bead for a chair, a bead for a room containing the chair, a bead for the building containing the room, etc. I wonder if you have something like a bead for a naked human body, beads for clothes, bead for clothed human body (I am thinking about Jasnah and the thief). When you soulcast, you don't change one bead, but all the beads connected to that state - so soulcasting "difficulty" increases exponential, not linear. 2) Maybe air is not an object? Maybe there are some "constants" in all realms - air being one of them? Or maybe it's a mental thing - she is expecting to run out of air, so she is. 1) Sun's, moon's representation is Shadesmar... given that you have no objects there, it should be ... not quite what it is in the physical.

  28. 1,2: No idea. I can guess, but nothing comes to mind at the moment. 3. I'd guess that they tend to gravitate to their appropriate locations, but not be locked down to them in the moment to moment. So far as correspondence to physical locations goes, an interesting possibility is that the locations of the beads don't actually correspond to physical locations, but instead only to each other. So beads whose objects belong in the palace will cluster together near the palace bead, which will in turn tend to be located near the beads of nearby buildings, and those beads to city blocks, and those to... and so on. This ties up well with the way that Shadesmar is known to expand/contract based on how much stuff is going on in any location, like how space is Shadesmar-less. -- So far as the "palace bead" not incorporating all of the others, recall that cognitive aspects look to work on the level of "objects," as we saw in TES. "The palace" is a singular object in its own right which happens to physically contain several other quite distinct objects. --- As I have not actually thought/written on this before, that I can recall, what theory of mine are you referring to?

  29. I personally think Renarin will be spending alot of time with Kaladin in WoR. I feel that Renarin has developed an acute sense of politics that both his father and his brother lack, but due to his body, he has never tried to be a leader. Kaladin is a great leader, but has no clue of the ins and outs of high alethi society. So by pairing them together, they could learn from each other as well as cover the others flaws. Also Kaladin still seem to have harbor a hatred for the lighteyes; Renarin could be used as a plot device to help Kaladin to sympathize and move on from his distaste. So any theories about why, Jasnah and her mother seem to be at odds?

  30. It's all a giant conspiracy. The bunnies and hot women secretly live underground and send false data back to Earth to hide their existence. This sort of stuff has been going on since the Apollo Invasion.

  31. Hm. This is a real pickle. I for one am glad I have avoided any suspicions so far. I will bite the bullet coin and declare I am a Regular Villager. And as far as suspicions go. Either Edgar or Beetle have to be a spiked. I just don't believe we would get two seekers. that would be awesome, but unlikely. and if one of them are seekers, then they should have some clues for us. Maybe they've had bad luck with seeking and haven't found any spiked yet, but then they at least know who isn't spiked. So we know both of them have been voting for non-spiked people. My guess would be to look there for clues. But we really have to make a good choice. One of our alleged seekers has to go. New theory when looking back... I may believe Beetle is good. He did call me out on being regular village. Any information Edgar gave us was already known. Beetle gave us information that wasn't know that played out to be true, verifying his seeker abilities in my mind. Gambles walked into the bar, turning everybody's heads. He wasn't stumbling, he didn't have a drink in his hand, he was clean shaven and one look at his eyes and one could see full clarity in them. "Yes," he said, addressing everybody in the bar at once, "I'm not drunk for once. This is more important than booze and gambling. I have good word from multiple dice games and with the recent turn of news, I think EDGAR is a spiked traitor!

  32. And if two non-spiked dies today instead of someone who is the most likely to be spiked, how many are then left? You tactic is to wait with killing those most likely to be spiked. The more we wait, the closer to equal numbers do the spiked come. We started with 14 people, guesses are 4 was spiked. A minimum 3 I´d say. We are now 11, no spiked have been killed. So likely 7-4 If we wait as you wish, its good odds we have 1-3 dead propably non-spiked. Saying 2 thats makes 5-4. Then you want to wait a second day on that... Even if your way works and we know who´s spiked then, its to late. We have lost when there are more spiked then non-spiked. *edit - Just to simplify for counters, I voted Beetle earlier, sticking to that.

  34. Blood Song by Ryan Anthony. It has many similarities with Kingkiller Chronicle, except its different. Best book I've read in 2013, but there's only first book out of 3. Malazan books are awesome, one of the greatest fantasy series out there and if you can get into it you'll love it but its not easy read. Demon Cycle series by Peter V. Brett(not finished). Broken Empire by Mark Lawrence. It's really dark though. First Law by Joe Abercrombie if you like badassery and aren't looking for something with lots of magic and heroic quests about saving world.

  35. Quick question: Where does the 10-minute time-table come from? Is it calculated from when the screams started, or from when Jasnah and Gavilar split up? I the latter is the case, then I doubt this theory's premise, as the meeting with both her Shadowspren and Liss could have taken up to and maybe even surpassing an hour. We already know that Gavilar had a bad feeling about that night ("Follow the codes tonight, brother"), so he might have gone and change directly into his Shardplate after he went away. And even if the former is the case, if he had started changing immediately, he could easily have had 15 to 20 minutes. Szeth was tasked to make a show, and even if he was rather quick about his killings, he spends what feels like at least a few minutes locked in that room where he prepared that huge rock to slam into the guards. Add everything up, and Gavilar could have had more than just 10 minutes to change.

  37. So in no particular order: 1) I want there to be more to the powers of the Windrunner's than the three lashings. Don't get me wrong, I really love the powers Kaladin has now and my imagination runs wild with possibilities often, but I do want a little more as he experiments and says more ideals 2) I want Kaladin to say another Ideal. I don't think that there will be more than one though as this is a pretty long series. 3) I want Kaladin to challenge Amaram to a duel. When he beats him by subtly using his Windrunner abilities, spare his life but take the shards. Then give the blade to Renarin and the plate to Dalinar. 4) Different magic system battle the WoB hinted at toward the end of the book. 5) More information about the Worldhopper organization, the 17th Shard. 6) More info about the Ghostbloods, A lot more. 7) Shallan story arc. I only enjoyed her character towards the end of WoK but that was because she was masterly developed as a character. Now that she's at a place where I enjoy reading about her I am thoroughly looking forward to her back story and modern story. 8) I am interested to see what role Taln will play as the Herald who didn't give up (even if he didn't really have a choice) and as the Herald of War 9) The almost inevitable Szeth vs Kaladin battle. This will be epic. I cant wait to read about when Szeth crashes through some hall doors and lashes him self to the wall or the roof and then all of a sudden there is this man with scars on his forehead and a very distinctive glow, standing on the wall/roof blocking his path.

  38. I am so excited about the chance to finally be relevant in conversation! Anyway, no. I still haven't seen the film, and I can follow the game just fine. At first, I did find it a bit difficult to follow, just because of the present tense style, but I've gotten used to it. The first couple of sessions don't really dwell on the "Transformers suplex Godzilla" part of the Pacific Rim pitch, instead building up the world and characters. Whenever the more alien stuff starts to appear, it's in a pretty gradual and easy-to-follow manner. So, yeah, you don't need to watch anything, just follow the links.

  39. I mentioned this in the other thread, but the date on the Navani's journal entries is Jeseses, the first day of the year of 1174. We can tell that the majority of Way of Kings took place in a two month span in 1173, WoR picks up directly after it, but since we don't know the exact dates in WoK, we don't really know how long we have until the end of the year. Characters in the book haven't even started mentioning the coming Weeping as the year's end approaches. As always, here are the death vision epigraphs, with the dates on them for comparison, spoiler tagged for space-saving reasons. None of those take place in 1174, even the very last one is still 91 days away.

  42. I'll recommend the Malazan Book of the Fallen. It's wonderful, but a hard read. Erikson has no mercy, and does no hand holding. Imagine if The Way of Kings didn't bother with the prologue or prelude, there were five times as many viewpoints, some taken from the perspective of people in the midst of plans you don't know the purpose of, and the history of Roshar was only half-alluded to, because the characters had no need to spell things out because they all knew the history anyways. Jasnah never teaches Shallan Soulcasting, Kaladin has no Teft for convenient information on Surgebinding. There's twenty Hoids, but ha! As if their motivations would be so clear as his. Honor didn't die, just faked his death, and he's actually worst enemies with Cultivation now, Odium never existed, except you don't know it's Honor or what he can do because the author would never be so kind as to tell you anything about the Cosmere. (I have exaggerated, but not by much.) If you can't get into the first book (I wouldn't blame you), then I'd recommend against continuing the series. The first book is hardest to understand, but the rest aren't all that much easier. Plots within plots, things that only make sense 3 books onwards, characters that drop in and out, disparate plotlines that only come together after you've forgotten them, Malazan has it all. Other book ideas: Expanded Universe Star Wars novels, if that's your thing. The writing isn't stellar, and I never cared a lot for Star Wars' universe, but I enjoyed the Thrawn novels, and anything with Vergere/Jacen Solo. Oh, and the X-Wing novels. There's a lot of books, since there's quite a few authors working on everything. I'm not a fan of the latest ones, and stopped reading, though. A Song of Ice and Fire. Not for everyone. The Belgariad/Malloreon by Eddings are good, though you might find them a bit simple and trope-filled now. The genre's come quite a long way in the past two decades. If you liked Rothfuss, try China Mieville's Embassytown. Sci-fi, but more of a book read because the prose is nice than read for an exciting plot. The first book of the Sword of Truth series and then stop there were no sequels don't listen to anyone who says different.

  43. One thing kind of bothers me about the shardblades. Syl says she is an Honorspren, and she says that she binds things. Her pranks were always about making things stick together. Shardblades sever things. They sever whatever bonds any material, and when they hit a person they sever the bond between the physical and the spirtual. The way a shardblade behaves seems completely the opposite of what Syl says Honorspren do.

  44. I'll try to make this quick -- I need a book recommendation (or multiple) to hold me over until Words of Radiance comes out. Preferably one that has an audiobook version. Recently I have read: Fantasy: Almost all Brandon stories, Kingkiller Chronicle, LOTR and Hobbit, Wheel of Time, The Host (long story...). In the past I have tried Jim Butcher... the story about the wizard detective guy, but I didn't really like it. Action/Adventure: Lots of Matthew Reilly, love it. SciFi: Pretty much just Enders series, but love it. So there is a bit of a taste profile for me recently if anyone feels like taking a shot at it. I'd really appreciate any help. Someone recommended Malazan, and I might give that a shot, but it is pretty long, so I'd also appreciate some reviews of it before I decide if I want to get moving on it. Thanks!

  45. Dyring is still voting for Beetle for execution no. 2 But Edgar came forward while beetle had more votes then himself. He had a good chance at getting away anyway. Would be a silly risk. Beetle just came forward cause he had several votes on himself already. Innkeeper Dyring gets more and more agitade as there is talking of letting his object of (lately murderous) dislike getting away. "You are all a daft lot. Yeasterday you got hoodwinkled into voting for that poor stupid sod who got is head chopped off. Now you´r getting fooled again, talking about swapping to save the worthless little nogood creature. E needs to be removed, before he manages to kill us all!"

  46. I don't agree that Kaladin would have to have a Shardblade to fight Szeth. I think that part of what Syl doesn't like about Dalinar's Shardblade is that they were made to fight Voidbringers and Thunderclasts, not be turned against other humans. It's just a feeling I have, as we don't know how she reacts to Shardblades other than Dalinar's so I wouldn't even call it a theory. When Szeth fought the Shardbearers in Jah Keved, he let his Shardblade turn to mist, so it is definitely not necessary to fight other Shardbearers with a Blade. A regular spear would take down Szeth, Kaladin will just need Lopen there throwing him new spears every time Szeth cuts through one.

  48. Hey guys. Hey guys do you remember that part where Shallan offered to marry Renarin? Because I don't know if you maybe didn't catch the part where Shallan OFFERED TO MARRY RENARIN. Wow, yeah remember that time that my ship got mentioned in canon as a marraige proposal? That was a cool thing. I think that part was my favorite part. I have this one favorite part of the reading and it was the part where Shallan offered to marry Renarin. That was a cool part. Wow. So cool. My favorite. Shallan. Renarin proposal. Wow. Okay but more seriously, I'm up for whatever Brandon throws at us, because he hasn't disappointed yet. Really the thing that I was more disappointed at was the fact that apparently Danlan and Adolin didn't work out. (I really like Danlan, and I hope she sticks around.) Betrothed without ever meeting is far from madly in love and gazing starrily into each other's eyes, and if I know anything about Brandon, we've got a long, drama filled road between us and even that distant hypothetical. Now... if I can stop writing keteks for five seconds...
