  2. So it looks like the three in the interlude aren't the only visitors to Roshar in Way of Kings! On twitter, Brandon had a conversation I already saw others had referenced here, about how allomancy would have trouble affect Shardplates, because of Investiture....but the real important thing was afterwards, people responded with surprise that Mistborn and Way of Kings was connected and Brandon said this: ...umm, WHAT? Multiple people from Mistborn? And my mind is blown. Discuss.

  3. One set of evidence that seems (at least to me) strangely neglected in this thread is the Herald images that appear in the arch at the beginning of each chapter. Going through quickly, I picked out all the chapters where Shallan and/or Jasnah appear, and the herald images for each of these chapters. CH3 - we first see Shallan - 2x herald 6 CH5 - we first see Jasnah - 2x herald 5 CH7 - Shallan attempts to convince Jasnah to take her as her ward - 2x herald 10 CH8 - Shallan convinces Jasnah to take her as her ward - 2x herald 5 CH28 - Jasnah communicates with Dalinar via spanreed - herald 5, herald 1 CH29 - Shallan and Jasnah debate viewpoints - herald 5, herald 6 CH33 - Kabsal shows Shallan the cymatic patterns - herald 5, herald 10 CH36 - Jasnah takes Shallan for a practical lesson - herald 5, herald 2 CH39 - Shallan considers the morality of Jasnah's murders and her own theft - herald 6, herald 2 CH42 - Shallan presents her conclusion to Jasnah, and plans to leave - herald 5, herald 10 CH45 - Shallan enters Shadesmar and soulcasts for the first time - herald 5, herald 6 CH48 - Kabsal attempts to poison Jasnah and ends up poisoning himself and Shallan - 2x herald 10 CH70 - Shallan realizes that Jasnah can soulcast as well, and both go to Shadesmar - herald 5, herald 7 CH72 - Jasnah reveals her suspicions about parshmen - 2x herald 5 CH74 - Shallan learns about the Ghostbloods - herald 5, herald 10 13 of the 15 chapters they appear in have either Herald 5 or Herald 6 at the beginning, or both. Once I realized the significance of the Herald images, I immediately thought that Shallan would belong to Order 6, and Jasnah to Order 5, based on the associations between the herald images and the chapters. The only thing that really doesn't fit for Jasnah being Order 5, in my mind, is the soulcasting with organics thing... which could just be something Brandon tossed in to throw us for a loop.

  4. @Wisdom I saw no one really talked about that part of your post, and I just have to. Are you suggesting that Kaladin may turn to the dark side? Kidding aside, I think it would be kind of cool if voidbringers were not a certain monsterous species or amalgamation of such that did the bidding of Odium, but they were actually ANYONE. Even radiants could be turned to being voidbringers or voidbinders if all it takes is a little push into being a servant of Odium, i.e. giving into one's basest desires of anger and revenge. And Kaladin giving into those basest desires toward Amaram or any lighteyes in general would be a major plot for him to be seduced into serving Odium. Although probably not.

  5. Why doesn't Sazed use gold Feruchemy to "fix" his problem of being eunuch? It seems that he wants to be normal so he can be a "real man" for Tindwyl, and the Synod would surely want as many Feruchemists as possible to pass on genes. Is it because it's an old wound, so nothings really damaged anymore, and thus impossible to heal? Or would doing so somehow give the fact that he's a Feruchemist away? Another question. Can gold Feruchemy be used to heal birth defects or genetic errors, like DNA replicating wrong? Could it heal cancer in yourself? If gold Feruchemy is using your own DNA to rebuild areas of damage, then it would probably be impossible, since the guide itself is bad.

  6. Ok, I just combed all relevant sections of the Brandonotholgy and HoA annotations looking for a specific reference to where Kelsier is now, and I found nothing concrete. Since both his spiritual and cognitive aspects remain, he is now possibly in a bit of both. One interesting thing to remember is that people dying in Roshar can see a world that is almost certainly Shadesmar. So I will proceed with the assumption that whatever is left of Kelsier is in Shadesmar. I have had a couple more ideas about why Kelsier can hang around, and I remembered he is also a Sliver! That's got to have something to do with it. If I had to take a guess I'd say that he can stick around for two reasons, one of which I stated above, that him being worshiped by the people in the Physical Realm has anchored him there, making it a little bit like he still has a physical aspect. The second part is also a guess. I am nearly certain that being a Sliver implies a large connection to the Shard, in the form of an increased spiritual aspect. (Could Kelsier use Preservation's power because he was an Allomancer!?!?!) Kelsier could now be using that over-sized Spiritual aspect to compensate for having a weakened physical one, similar to what a Shard does, except on an obviously smaller scale. Shards have so much Spiritual power that having a Physical aspect is actually limiting. The one potential conflict is that Kelsier couldn't have been a Sliver until he took up Preservation, which he couldn't have stuck around to do unless he was a Sliver, at least according to my theory. However, I think I know how to solve this. I don't think you have to exit the Three Realms right away when you die. The people of Roshar are obviously going to Shadesmar first. (which is somehow linked to precognition?) When Kelsier arrived at his layaway in Shadesmar, he was already used to using Preservation's power, because he was an Allomancer. So he was to, as Brandon said, "piggy-back" on to Preservation's power, but not fully, because the Well hadn't attuned him yet. Then he gave Vin Preservation, and his nature as a Sliver allowed him to hang on. By this argument, Vin and Rashek could have hung around too, since they were Slivers and the subject of worship, but Vin at least chose to move on. Wouldn't it be creepy if Rashek was still watching too? Kelsier however, would certainly not choose to die, when there was still meddling to be done. Does any of this make any sense? I hope so, because if not I just wasted a half an hour. Regardless, in my opinion, simply not wanting to go on, isn't enough. Their are plenty of people who don't want to die and are afraid, so Shadesmar should be chocked full of them.

  7. Marsh: I need to become more than just a man. Kelsier: By becoming a symbol instead? Yeah, been there, done that. Marsh: No. By nailing spikes into my body until I become a freaking MISTBORN SUPERSOLDIER, that's how. Kelsier: I held Preservation's pow- Marsh: I'M BATMAN.

  9. This is a very good point. The chapter headings aren't something I'd considered before, but they do seem to strongly indicate that Shallan is in Order 6, and Jasnah Order 5. As for Soulcasting organics, there's no reason that being in that particular Order would have any effect on her ability to Soulcast organics. Yes, number 5 on the Soulcasting chart is aligned with plants, wood, and moss, but that doesn't necessarily mean that being in Order 5 grants any special abilities with Soulcasting that Essence. Soulcasting is a Surge all on its own; it probably functions the same way regardless of which Order someone is in. The different Orders must gain access to it from a different kind of spren-bond, but the actual act of Soulcasting is probably the same for both Orders that can do it. In chapter 72, Jasnah comments that it's harder to Soulcast something that isn't the pure form of an Essence. Presumably, you need a better comprehension of what it is you want to transform when you're working with something that isn't an Essence, and Jasnah simply doesn't know a lot about biology. Granted, this is conjecture, but it seems logical to me.

  10. The simplest explanation would be that it's just Hoid and Demoux. I don't know where anyone else would be. Wait.... actually. There is one more place that I would look. Remember the Prologue? How there are some people that are there talking to Elhokar that Szeth notices? Maybe them.... After all, it seems like one of them seems similar to a Dula. Let me pull up the quote: These profiles, however, are not nearly as good as the Purelake scene descriptions.

  11. I don't think Shallan and Kaladin are going to be a "thing" (I like the idea of Shallan/Renarin) though they might eventually become friends. I also think that she will find out about Syl when she does a drawing of Kaladin. Syl will show up like the symbolspren do.

  13. I don't think that it's possible for someone to come back if they're only mostly dead. The best evidence I have is Kelsier. A man who has a strong connection to Scadrial, is worshipped the world across and is a Sliver of Preservation. He also has the type of personality to keep meddling with the world, and we know he still does from Shadesmar somehow. Don't you think if he could have, Kelsier would have come back? I think that he hasn't says it all. I think it's extremely unlikely. Okay, I just had an epiphany. We know that regular people need a presence in all three Realms, Physical, Cognitive, and Spiritual, to live as we know it, with a functioning body and everything. Kelsier has lost his physical form so he should pass on, but he doesn't. Maybe the fact that he's venerated or worshipped by so many people existing in the Physical Realm, is enough to anchor him and replace his own physical presence, allowing him to still live on as a Cognitive aspect/person/thing. What do you guys think?

  14. My favorite cosmere character is Marsh. Several reasons: - Characters who have to fight their own psychology or other corrupting influences are interesting to me for some reason. (Peter Wiggin is my favorite character in the Ender's Game cycle, and I loved the John Wayne Cleaver books by Dan Wells). - With nothing but cleverness, strength of will, and a bit of luck, he manages to screw up Ruin's plans (even though Ruin was using him as his chief pawn) and plays as big of a part in saving the world as anyone but Sazed. And nobody even knows (except Sazed, apparently). - And then he shows up at the end of Alloy of Law as Hemalurgic Batman. And mentions that he and Scadrial's god don't always see eye to eye. This scene (and similar ones for Sazed, TenSoon, and even Vin and Spook) was worth reading the book for even if the story itself hadn't been any good. (One thing Alloy of Law era Scadrial has in common with the Discworld: an awesome personification of Death) On an unrelated note: Funny how many of these are also true of the Doctor...

  15. If you really want to see a flat romance, try reading The Belgariad by David Eddings, or the Shadowmarch series by Tad Williams. They both use the love mechanism of, "I only met you briefly, and despised you, but now that you're gone the thought of your pretty hair/honest face just won't leave my mind." And that's how with virtually no interaction of any kind, characters fall in love. Now that's cheap. With Vin and Elend (and granted, it's been awhile since I read the books), I always felt like they had an opposites attract thing going on, so even though they're different, I never felt like they didn't make sense. As previously stated, they both obviously have a lot of issues, but I also feel like their relationship wasn't a main focus of the novel. Not the romantic part anyway. The part that Brandon was most interested in (it seems from the annotations) was Vin's ability to trust. That's why we have a lot of inner monologue and doubts - not because she doesn't feel something for him, but because despite those feelings, she doesn't know how to trust other people. I think the more romantic part of their relationship probably took place in the background, behind the scenes, because their feelings for each other don't actually drive the novel. Vin's conscious decision to trust is a major part of her character arc, so that's what took the foreground. Not to mention, how much romantic stuff do they really have time for? They just overthrew an empire and now they're desperately trying to hold it together. They don't exactly have a lot of time to go on dates, or even just be around each other without the weight of the world on their shoulders. I think that's got to make things pretty awkward. I also don't remember feeling like Vin was acting clingy, but again, it's been awhile since I read the books. And I disagree with the idea that just because a character is an idealist means he doesn't have any depth. I think it's much easier to have a character who's always looking out for number 1 than it is to have a character who has ideals and then has to struggle to hang on to them in a world where that's becoming increasingly difficult. I would much rather read about that, even if they don't succeed, than read about a bunch of selfish people who get what they want because they're selfish. I get enough of that in real life. I think the idealist has a much harder struggle, which is what makes those characters interesting.

  16. So Ralan is koloss Ala Breeze. How does he eat? Such a big dead was made over vvenna's specific dietary needs. Is Ralan perhaps part eruntu, or are the dietary restrictions pure lies from the priesthood (doubtful). I like the idea that lower Sept koloss are interbreeding with eruntu similar to mistborn.

  20. Actually, having looked through Szeth's chapters again, I noticed something interesting. From the prologue: And later, in ninth interlude: Blinking is mentioned twice in connection with a Basic Lashing. That's probably not coincidence. So maybe the focus for the gravity surge is related to the eyes.

One of them can observe and perfectly remember all the necessary details, write them down for their partner who then uses super mental speed to analyze and deduce the answers from the facts at hand. I can see it now: TWINKEYE AND ZINCY: CRIME FIGHTERS Of course, this also gives great options for CSI: Luthadel, and its spinoffs CSI: Elend and CSI: Roughs.
