After you login, to change the username that this gives you, use the command /nick NewUsername where you replace "NewUsername" with whatever nickname you want to go as here.
You can access the chatroom in many different ways, if the Java applet to the right is not working. You could use the webchat interface, or, you can use any IRC client you'd like! This would probably be the best way to view it on smartphones, by picking your favorite IRC app (on Android, AndChat is a great option). Whichever client you so choose, the hostname is "irc.freenode.net" and the channel is #cosmere.
